As far as I know there is no really sophisticating free software out there.
There seem to be some efforts at GNU to provide us with something. For all
who want to take a look:

is the DIMUND Document Image Understanding Information Server. At least
they have an old OCR-program (that I couldn't get running) and some
other informations about OCR.
