I need a feasibility check for a story I'm
considering.

Here's the scenario: a standard 1/2" VHS video
tape has been de-gaussed through a bulk eraser.
I'm proposing the FBI or local police agency
with a well-equipped electronics lab can detect
the super-low signals which may still reside on
the tape, and enhance those signals so that the
original data is restored.

Can anyone verify that such equipment currently
exists? Or is the process totally impossible
with today's technology? If you care to respond
with private e-mail, my address is
larmos@netcom.com. I appreciate all input.
