     R&D OPPORTUNITY, JHU/APPLIED PHYSICS LABORATORY

The Research Center of the Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics 
Laboratory seeks an individual to conduct research and development in 
distributed information processing systems with a focus on distributed 
objects, heterogeneous systems integration, and open systems standards.

This senior staff position in the Advanced Signal & Information Processing 
Group will:

1. Provide research, development, and engineering support to APL departments 
in the construction of distributed information systems.

2. Conduct basic and applied research in distributed systems and 
heterogeneous information systems integration.

3. Establish and maintain funded research programs in computer and 
information science that focus on the development of technologies which 
facilitate information processing in complex systems.

4. Publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present results at 
peer-reviewed conferences, and actively participate in professional 
activities.

Qualified candidates should have:  Ph.D.or equivalent in computer science 
and significant experience in the design and development of distributed 
processing systems, distributed objects, and systems integration gained 
through Ph.D.-level research or work experience.  Ability to serve as 
principal architect of complex information processing systems using open 
systems standards.  Proficiency in distributed objects, CORBA, 
object-oriented methodologies, and C++.

Desirable qualifications would include:  Proficiency in Java, Lisp, CLOS, 
the X Window System, and alternative distributed object standards. 
 Engineering background and systems development experience.  Ability to 
serve as lead engineer for projects using object-oriented methodologies and 
tools.  Demonstrated ability to procure funding.  Experience in integrating 
legacy systems and knowledge of intelligent agents.
