  Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL)

       Artificial Intelligence Laboratory


       Research Assistant/Programmer


  Duties:

   The new assistant will have two duties at about 50% time each:

   a) maintain software on the laboratory's 15 Sun and SGI 
        Unix workstations, prospect for new software/hardware

   b) implement a planning tool for computer networks based on
        a novel principle. Implementation language: LISP or C,
        with database and user interfaces.

  Background:

   Masters/diploma degree in computer science or equivalent.
   Knowledge of French not indispensable but helpful, interest
   in research issues. Good knowledge of UNIX and experience with
   software maintenance. Knowledge and interest in AI as well
   as computer networking.

  Benefits:

   The contract will be one-year renewable. The 50% corresponding
   to duty a) is renewable up to 6 years, the 50% corresponding to 
   duty b) for 2 years but can later be replaced by another project
   or a doctorate depending on qualifications and interest. 
   Possibility to obtain a doctorate. 

  Salary: 

   Depending on age and qualifications, but generally no less then
   50'000 Swiss Francs per year (1 US$ = 1.2 SFr. approximately).

  Location:

   The Lausanne campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
   Lausanne is centrally located about 50km from Geneva and within 
   less than one hour from numerous skiing resorts. Applicants should
   note that the cost of living in Switzerland is considerably higher
   than in many other countries.

  Starting date:

   as soon as possible, no later than August, 1996
