We used Flickr and Google to issue the queries for Statue of Liberty, apple, cow, rose, violin, and BMW. We downloaded the most and least interesting pictures using Flickr's ranking system, and also the first few pages of results from Google. Images that were not semantically related to the query and graphics were manually removed. From this we obtain 50-70 images that are related to the search term. We rank these images using our photo quality assessment algorithm and report the top and bottom ranked images. Our algorithm is almost always correct in that the highly ranked images are also high quality. A standard search engine such as Google would return the images in random order. In fact, the reason why we used Flickr is so that we can download the "most interesting" pictures, where we hope to find high quality photos for our ranking system. All of the downloaded pictures are organized by their directories. The results of our algorithm are stored in directories with the "_results" suffix. In the results directory, the filename prefix indicates its ranking. Our algorithm is able to correctly classify 45/48 of the photos, for an accuracy of 96%. The photos which we believe to be ranked incorrectly are listed below: Statue: 65_Statue of Liberty BZs.jpg This is a silhouette of the statue of liberty, and it should not be ranked this low. This is probably because the blur detector did not detect many high frequency edges, and thought the photo was blurry. BMW: 2_F1000005.jpg Violin: 2_99.01.violin.jpg This is clearly a snapshot, although there is nothing technically wrong with the photo. It not blurry, has high contrast, and the subjects are well defined. Our features are not able to tell this is a snapshot. Violin: 2_99.01.violin.jpg We believe this is a low quality photo, but only because of the content. The wires on the violin make the photo look bad. Technically, there is nothing wrong with this photo -- it is not blurry, has high contrast, and the violin is well defined against the black background. In all respects, this is a "professional" photo, as a casual user would not take take a snapshot of a violin in this setting.
