The wealth of ready-made data structures, and syntax taken from LISP, make Perl a natural language for rapidly prototyping AI applications. A discussion of the 1999 SOlitaire 500's game (based on perpetual motion) and the various strategies used by the entries and the winner.

tipjar.com: an object oriented database with e-mail verification

45-minute talk

Presentation and discussion of the design and implementation of the "teller" and "vault" systems involved in tipjar.com, a free commerce system which puts the burden of authentication on the payer rather than the payee. Presentation of ways to use tipjar's interface, which uses e-mail address for user primary key, in e-commerce CGIs. This presentation will be TipJar's "conference debut."
