ELIGIBILITY: American Fellowships support doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence, teaching experience, and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research.

Candidates may apply for only one of the awards. Former recipients of these awards are not eligible to apply for additional American Fellowships or publication grants.

Career Development Grants

AWARD: Grants in this program will not be made for the 2003-4 academic year but will resume the following year. Applications will be available in August 2003 for the 2004-5 academic year.
DEADLINE: Not available for the 2003-4 academic year.
ELIGIBILITY: Career Development Grants support women who hold a bachelors degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to AAUW members, women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields. Funds are available for tuition, fees, books, supplies, local transportation, and dependent care. Funds are not available for distance learning. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents whose last degree was received before June 30, 1997. Those qualifying for Selected Professions Fellowships are not eligible to receive Career Development Grants. Approximately 60 grants are available in two categories. Find out more.

Clare Boothe Luce Program for Women in Science and Engineering

ELIGIBILITY: Graduate Student, Female Only, U. S. Citizen

Its purpose is to encourage women to enter, study, graduate, and teach in fields where there have been obstacles to their advancement: physics, chemistry, biology, meterorology, engineering, computer science, and mathematics.

The Clare Boothe Luce Program promotes the advancement of American women through higher education in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

Please note that the Luce Foundation does not accept applications directly from students, have your Department Chairman or Financial Aid office write or call for information regarding this program.

Community Action Grants

ELIGIBILITY: Community Action Grants provide seed money to individual women, AAUW branches, AAUW state organizations, and local community-based nonprofit organizations for innovative programs or nondegree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls. Applicants must be women who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Grant projects must have direct public impact, be nonpartisan, and take place within the United States or its territories. U.S. Dept. of Energy, Office of Energy Research Computational Sci. Grad. Fellowship Prog.

DESCRIPTION: The Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a Ph.D. in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing. Fellows also participate in research at a DOE laboratory.

GSA Graduate Student Conference Funding

AWARD: Up to $500 per graduate student to either attend or make presentations at key conferences/exhibitions in their field.
DEADLINE: Applications are expected to be completed at least one month before the conference.
ELIGIBILITY: Open to all graduate students. A recommendation letter from the applicant's advisor will be required regarding the presentation and department-level options for alternative funding. Graduate students may not receive more than one Conference Funding award per academic year.

International Fellowships

ELIGIBILITY:

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported.*

The Foundation will award 58 fellowships for the 2003-04 academic year. Six of these awards are available to members of International Federation of University Women affiliate organizations. These fellowship recipients may study in any country other than their own.

The Foundation also awards several annual Home Country Project Grants ($5,000 to $7,000 each) to women who received AAUW Educational Foundation International Fellowships between 1999 and 2003. These grants support community-based projects designed to improve the lives of women and girls in the fellow's home country.

Microsoft Women's Scholarship

DESCRIPTION: Microsoft offers this one year full tuition award to women based on eligibility, quality of application, interest in the software industry, and financial need. Microsoft will interview finalists by March 1, 2003. The names of the scholarship winners will be announced by March 21, 2003. Microsoft is offering full tuition sholarships totalling $540,000 for the 2003-2004 academic year.
AWARD: Full tuition for one academic year (2003-2004). All recipients of the scholarship will be required to complete a salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. (Microsoft reserves the right not to offer a position to the scholarship winner if an appropriate match can not be found.)

ELIGIBILITY:

Students must be enrolled full-time and making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related discipline, such as math or physics, with a demonstrated interest in computer science. Because the scholarship is merit based, the student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative GPA out of a possible 5.0.

National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) Fellowship

DESCRIPTION: NPSC welcomes applications from all qualified students, with continued emphasis on recruiting of under-represented minorities and women.
DEADLINE: November 2003
AWARD: Varies yearly. The NPSC fellowship covers tuition and fees, provided by the university department, and a stipend, provided by the employer. For current fellows, and those entering prior tp 2003, the stipend is $12,500 annually for years 1-4, and $15,000 for years 5-6. Beginning in 2003, the stipend will rise to $16,000 anually for each of the six years of the fellowship. In subsequent years, the stipend will rise further, though once again, the increase will apply only to newly enrolled fellows.

For fellows entering in 2003 and beyond, the overall value of an NPSC fellowship with exceed $200,000; the exact amount depending on the university attended. This includes the stipend for 6 years, two summers pay for the internships, and the cost of 6 years of tuition and fees.

The fellowship is renewable up to 6 years.
ELIGIBILITY: Fellow applying must be:
1) A U.S. citizen and have the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution.
2) In senior year with at least a 3.0/4/0 GPA, or in the first year of a graduate program pursuing a PhD or in a terminal master's program (no PhD program provided at current university) or returning from the workforce with no more than a master's degree.
3) In fields of study: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and their subdisciplines and related engineering fields: Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical.
MORE INFO: Selection is based primarily on research experience at university and industry, letters of recommendation at professional level (professors and employers), academic standing (GPA), GRE scores (General test required, subject test suggested and may be required by graduate department).


Selected Professions Fellowships

DESCRIPTION: Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study during the fellowship year in designated degree programs where women's participation traditionally has been low.

Women who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Candidates in all programs except the master’s in engineering and medicine are eligible to apply for support for the final year of study only and are expected to receive their degrees at the end of the fellowship year. Women pursuing master’s in engineering programs are eligible to apply for either the first or final year of study. Women in medical programs may apply for either their third or final year of study. Doctoral candidates in engineering must be entering the final stages of writing their dissertations. Special consideration is given to applicants who show professional promise in innovative or neglected areas of research or practice in areas of public interest.

The Judith Resnik Challenger Scholarships for Women

DESCRIPTION: To recognize the pioneering spirit and outstanding academic and personal achievement of women committed to study in engineering, science or computer science, Carnegie Mellon offers the Judith Resnik -- Challenger Scholarships for Women.
AWARD: The Judith Resnik -- Challenger Scholarships for Women will cover at least half the cost of undergraduate tuition. These awards are presented without regard to a family's financial need and are renewable for four years of undergraduate education at Carnegie Mellon, provided students maintain an outstanding academic record.

Covergys Academic Achievement Recognition Program

DESCRIPTION: To acknowledge and reward academically successful students who have chosen a field of study related to Convergy's business and industry. Scholarships will be granted to students enrolled at selected universities based on specific criteria. Each university will select a qualified candidate to be approved by Convergys.
DEADLINE: October 7, 2002 (submit application materials to FRAC for consideration)
AWARD: $5000 per year for students in Information Technology, Information Systems and Computer Science.
ELIGIBILITY: Sophomores or juniors with a QPA of 3.0 or higher. The Applicant must be a U.S. citizen. Must demonstrate initiative and leadership abilities and characteristics.

Goldwater Scholarship Program

DESCRIPTION: The Goldwater Scholarship was established to attract students into a career in Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or an eligible Engineering discipline.
DEADLINE: November 15, 2002
AWARD: The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per academic year. Current sophomores can expect to receive a maximum of two years of scholarship support; current juniors, one year.
ELIGIBILITY: Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to students who are sophomores or juniors in the current academic year and who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

Google Student Scholarship Program

DESCRIPTION: Google Inc. applauds the student scientists who achieve academic excellence and the Computer Science departments that motivate them. To acknowledge the efforts of these students and their schools, Google Inc. is pleased to offer the Google Student Scholarship Program. Under this program, Google awards cash or scholarship prizes to eligible students and their nominating department, as explained below.
DEADLINE: December 15, 2001 (postmark)
AWARD: Google's top scientists will evaluate all applications received and will, in their sole discretion, award the following three prizes in early 2002:

First Prize: $10,000 to student and $10,000 to CS dept.
Second Prize: $7,500 to student and $7,500 to CS Dept.
Third Prize: $5,000 to student and $5,000 to CS Dept.

ELIGIBILITY: To qualify for this program, an undergraduate or graduate student must be on track to graduate with a GPA of 3.80 or above in Computer Science or Computer Engineering/Software Engineering by June 2002. In addition to an excellent academic record, we will consider other outstanding achievement such as significant contributions to the Open Source community, unique projects, or exceptional teaching skills. Students will be evaluated relative to their peer group, i.e., a BSCS student will not be directly compared to a MSCS or Ph.D. student.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation Truman Scholarships

DESCRIPTION: The Foundation awards scholarships to college students who have outstanding potential, plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and wish to attend graduate school to help prepare for their careers.
AWARD: Candidates are nominated by her or his college or university. The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000. Scholars are eligible to receive $3,000 for the senior year of undergraduate education and $27,000 for graduate studies. Scholars in master's degree programs planning to receive degrees in one to two years are eligible to receive $13,500 per year. Scholars in law programs are eligible to receive $13,500 for the second year of law school and $13,500 at the start of the third year's second semester if they provide evidence that they will enter public service upon graduation or upon completion of any judicial clerkships after graduation. Scholars in graduate programs requiring three or more years of academic study are eligible to receive $9,000 per year for a maximum of three years. Scholars may attend graduate or professional schools in the United States or in foreign countries.

Student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2003 and August 2004, or a student in the third year of collegiate study who expects to graduate during the 2002-2003 academic year, or a senior-level student who is a resident of Puerto Rico or Islands, committed to a career in public service, in the upper quarter of his or her class, and a United States citizen or a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Microsoft General Scholarship

DESCRIPTION: At Microsoft, we want to encourage students from groups currently underrepresented in the field of computer science to pursue technical degrees. While all candidates who meet the criteria for eligibility described below may apply, a large majority of our scholarships will be awarded to female and underrepresented minority students. Minority applicants must be a member of one of the following groups underrepresented in the software field: African American, Hispanic, or Native American.
