During the week of Feb. 11-15, 2008, Greg Kesden told me about something he's seen a couple of times, and today (Mon., 18 Feb.) I saw it for myself the first time. Sometimes the students will tip the machines forward, so that they're resting on the iMac's bottom face with the stand's baseplate in the air. I left this one powered down until it cooled, so I could take a picture:

This should NEVER happen. I believe that with the new stands the machines are running a bit hotter because much of their backplates are covered instead of being exposed to air. When they're tipped forward like this, the cool-air-intake vents on the bottom face are mostly or completely blocked.

Greg told me that every time he's seen it, the machine goes down within a few days. I expect the same will happen with the one I saw today (Mon., 18 Feb.), so it's been replaced with a hot-swap machine and is running in my office until if fails and can be reported.
