Scholars Program

Applications Closed for Summer 2009
(Enrollment period is January through February.)

What is the Robotics Institute Summer Scholars Program?

The Robotics Institute Summer Scholars program is a summer research program for Junior and Senior undergraduate students. Scholars will have a chance to work on state-of-the-art research projects at Carnegie Mellon’s world-renowned Robotics Institute who fit their area of interest. Projects will come from a wide variety of sub-fields in robotics including (but not limited to!) mobile robotics, computer vision, machine learning, robot navigation, autonomy, humanoid robotics, human-robot interaction, multi-robot systems, graphics, and mechanical design. We also expect to host some special activities for the Summer Scholars.

How do I participate?

Apply online. Complete Applications are due by February 28, 2009. You do not have to complete the entire application in one session. The application can be saved at any point, and you may return at your convenience. Returning to the Home page at any time during the application process will provide an overview of the status for each section of your application. You will need to complete each section by either selecting the section from the Application Checklist or from the navigational bar at the top of the page. There is no application fee.

Is the research experience paid?

The Robotics Institute will accept the highest quality students. We expect in many cases that the internship will be paid by the faculty member assigned to you, but you should indicate on your application if you are able to provide your own funding.

When will I find out if I’ve been accepted?

Admission will be rolling this year based on the availability of faculty sponsors. We expect most scholars will receive informal notification near the end of March or beginning of April from the faculty member who you will be working with. An official invitation from the University will follow.

When does the research experience happen?

Exact dates should be arranged with the faculty member with whom you will be working, but nominally the placement will take place between May 27 and August 21.

Can graduating seniors apply?

Yes. Program goals mean a preference for current undergraduates, but strong graduating seniors will be be considered as well.
