For some reason, many of the roads in and around Pittsburgh do not connect. It's surprising since the five-way intersection is also very popular. Come on guys, figure it out. Do you like intersections or not? The reason for this non-intersection is unknown. Our initial theory, that because of the hills the roads are all built along equi-potentials turned out to be false, as the elevation graph farther down the page demonstrates. There is plenty of change in potential. In any case, the result of this is that any path from Pittsburgh to Monroeville that does not take the highway has to cut through yards / fields / golf courses, and probably includes at least one trek through the woods.
