Program

Participants will receive a set of readings before the workshop starts.

  • Tuesday - Design readings
    • The first day we will discuss classic design literature, including an evaluation of great design successes and failures. Discussions will be facilitated by the faculty, so students will become comfortable talking to one another and challenging each others' ideas.

Homework: the participants will frame the day's discussion in terms of their research topic and select a paper from another domain that informs their research topic.

  • Wednesday - Design paradigms
    • The second day we will focus on how one does research in design. What are the research paradigms in design research? How are they the same or different from research in related design fields? What are interesting research questions?

Homework: Participants extracts their planned design paradigm and compare it to the alternatives discussed during the day.

  • Thursday - Intensive work on proposals
    • On the third day, several great designers will be invited to speak to the participants in the workshop. There will be discussions of the ideas that have been covered in the workshop and how they apply to each participant's research.

      Homework: Prepare Friday's presentation

  • Friday - Student presentations
    • On the final day, the students will present their proposals to the group. Wrap up sessions will cover how to recreate the workshop at one's home institution, reflection on what was gained from the workshop and assessment of the format and content.
