After promising myself one for ages, I finally broke down and ordered my self a laptop computer. Being technically inclined and hopelessly infatuated with new toys, I decided to join the 90's home entertainment revolution and opted for the DVD drive and pcmcia DVD-decoder card.
Naturally, I'm not happy just building a DVD collection and watching as much stuff as possible wide-screen. I need as much technical information at my finger tips - 'cause I may need it at any moment. So, without further ado, my collection of pointers to various heaps of DVD data.
DVD FAQ
This seems to me to be the finest source of DVD information
available on the web. Extensive and well researched, it's
probably the first place to look for the answer to any technical
questions about DVD. For instance, some people think that a disc
has both NTSC and PAL versions of the video -
WRONG
CD and DVD Technologies
I just like this page for its graphic showing the relative sizes
of the pits on CD versus DVD. Did I ever claim I was normal? Oh,
the
sources of information
page seems to have lots of information pointers.

DVD Techincal Specs
OK, so it's not the full specifications, you have to
pay Toshiba $5000
for them, but this post supposedly has the most techincal
information about the video format available on the
Web. Dejanews has a copy of
this post
as well.
PC DVD
Some (not really useful yet) details on ripping images and video
from DVDs.
Once you have a DVD player, thoughts naturally turn towards assembling your very own DVD collection. Of course, you'll want to do this as cheaply as possible, so besides getting them as presents, here are some sites where you can find out about deals on these attractive round shiny objects.
DVD Price Search
Updated daily, this site trawls quite a number of online DVD
stores and can tell you not only where the cheapest place to buy
a particular DVD is, but also what set of stores to order the 5
DVDs you've decided you cannot live without from. Also has
information about current special offers from stores.
Raiser
Just found this site and it seems to be a good round up of
available coupons for various online stores. Have yet to use it
to save money though.
