Scott McElfresh's
 music page

I am a woodwind player.  An important part of my life is the time I spend with community groups that perform band, orchestral, and chamber music.

Scott With Katie
That's me in the middle with my (then) 8-month old daughter Katie.   (Performing with the Upper Valley Community Band in Taftsville, VT.)

East Winds Symphonic Band
  • Rehearses in Forest Hills, PA outside of Pittsburgh, under the direction of Susan Sands.
  • I currently play the Bass Clarinet with EWSB.  I have been a part of the band since 2001, and have also played Bb clarinet, alto clarinet, and alto sax.
  • My wife Sarah plays the baritone in this group.   Daughters Katie and Elizabeth attend most rehearsals and some members consider them the band mascots.  Thus, music is indeed something that my family can share.
  • I was on the board from 2002-2008, serving as Vice President for 3 of those 6 years.
  • From 2003 - 2010, I was the Concert Manager, in charge of bookings and logistical details.

Delmont Concert Band
  • Delmont, PA under the direction of Lois Snyder.
  • My wife started playing with them in 2008.  I joined them in 2009 and played for a year (on Bb clarinet and tenor sax).

SouthWestern Pennsylvania Band Partners
  • One of the founding members of this organization to foster communication among community bands and orchestras in the Pittsburgh region.

Easton Municipal Band
  • I played with them from the fall of 1998 to the summer of 2001.   I  played alto sax, tenor sax, and clarinet.
  • I was quite happy in July of 2000 when my wife Sarah joined the band, too.  She plays the baritone horn.

North Central Ohio Adult Music Camp
  • I attended the camp in June 2007, playing the clarinet and bass clarinet.   In 2008, my wife and daughters also attended.   Work and other schedules prevented attendance in 2009 and 2010.
  • I enjoyed my time there greatly.

Seaway Valley Community Band
  • Seaway Valley Community Band, Ogdensburg, NY.  I played alto sax and clarinet with them for two and a half years (1996-1998).

Hosmer Strings + Plus
  • A community orchestra associated with the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY.  I played clarinet with them for one season in 1995-1996.
  East Winds Chamber Clarinets
  • I joined with some friends to form this small clarinet ensemble that performs at churches, libraries, and other venues.
  • I currently act as the main contact person for concerts.

   Three Rivers Community Band Festival
  • I have performed as part of the East Winds Symphonic Band and as part of the mass band and the 2010 Festival Band.
  • I serve on the committee that organizes the festival.   One of my main responsibilities was concert-day logistics.

Associaton of Concert Bands
  • I have been a member since 1995.
  • I have attended some of their annual conventions, performing at 3 of them:
    • 1995 in the Upper Valley Community Band.
    • 2008 in the East Winds Symphonic Band.
    • 2009 in the Convention Band.

Upper Valley Community Band
  • In the Hanover, NH area, under the direction of Carole Blake.   Assistant Conductors included Ralph Bowie, Ken Munsie, and Cindy Boehm-Patenaude.
  • While living in the Lebanon, NH area, I played alto sax, clarinet, and bass clarinet with them regularly for four years (1991-1995) and occassionally sit in with the UVCB during some summers.
  • In June 1999, I traveled to Germany and Austria with the UVCB, on the Hands Across the Sea tour.    I played flute with them on the tour.
  • Also in 1999, I played clarinet with the UVCB for some summer gigs (including the Boston Festival of Bands sponsored by the Metropolitan Wind Symphony).
  • I served on the board for 3 years, serving 2 years as secretary and 1 year as vice-president.
