I obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in information engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1980 and 1982. After working in industry in for two years and at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory for another two years, in 1986 I entered Carnegie Mellon , where I exited in 1991 with a Ph.D. in Computer Science under Herbert Simon. For my minor, I took the graduate core course in Philosophy of Science with Adolf Grunbaum at the University of Pittsburgh .

Since 1991 I have been a member of the computer science faculty (research) at Carnegie Mellon. I am also a member of the Center for Light Microscope Imaging and Biotechnology and hold a courtesy appointment in Philosophy .
