| DITOPS: an intelligent scheduling system | |||
The schedules explained by AutoBrief are generated by another research system, DITOPS, developed at Carnegie Mellon University. It applies state-of-the-art technology to generate aircraft schedules for moving cargo and people based on a large set of requirements (origins, destinations and shipment dates) and capabilities (airplanes and port capacities). The problem is that DITOPS does not give much indication of what might have caused shipments to be scheduled unsuccessfully, i.e. later than required. This is where AutoBrief steps in. Its analysis module generates hypotheses about possible causes for deficiencies in the schedule. Its explanation module communicates those hypotheses to the user, who typically is a transportation analyst or planner.
In reality the display above is dynamic and shows the progress of scheduling. Red bars indicate flights scheduled to diliver cargo after its due date.
