Learning Mappings vs. Learning Strategies in Robot Learning

Robots can learn mappings using a wide variety of techniques.  This
ability has led to impressive demonstrations of robots learning
challenging tasks.  These techniques work well in situations in which
a human programmer has specified the input and output representations.
Choosing a representation is closely tied to the choice of strategy of
how a robot will accomplish a task.  We do not yet have techniques
that will allow learning robots to find new strategies.  This talk
will describe our efforts to develop robots that cheat by finding
simpler ways of achieving task goals.
