Magnetic Building Blocks

Magnetic Building Blocks consists of a set of plastic fasteners and struts which children can use to build anything from towers to townhouses. Above are three of the pieces from a typical set. The upper left is a spherical fastener. It has six holes spaced at right angles to each other in a cubic pattern, with each hole housing a magnetic plate at the bottom. These connect to the struts shown on the lower right, which have magnetic tips protruding from wither end of the flexible rods. The upper right block is a fastener like the sphere, but lies flat with connections on the sides. This toy teaches principles of magnetic attraction and repulsion, as well as structural model building and the concepts of center of mass and balance. The pieces can be made large enough for small children to play with without a choking hazard, though the target audience will probably be children ages six and up.
The blocks are cheap to manufacture as they can be made out of injection molded plastic and ferrous permanent magnets. They will be very durable and lightweight, and the plastic will ensure child safety. Since there are no moving parts or electronics, they will not require any maintenace, waterproofing, or pose a danger to younger children.
