Role Mole

Role Mole’s glasses problem was a test of creativity, design, and production.  The glass case had to be a physical object that would allow Role Mole to know where his glasses are at all times during his date.  The design required testing and a lot of thinking and planning. The design process was very constrained in the aspects of making a prototype that was functional and chic at the same time.  I was trouble at first as to what part of the body my holder should center around. Finally, I decided that the arms and shoulder area was the best place.  After seeing a particularly interesting advertisement in a magazine, I had my design. Communication for this project was based on the oral presentation, where I had to relay my thought processes to the class and display my rejected and final designs. I learned that advertising can very subliminal and persuasive and that can effect the way people think and the way people act.

Garfield

Designing a six-pack holder for Garfield was a time consuming and frustrating exercise.  The only communication involved revolved around the presentation of my carrying device to the rest of the class.  The main problem to solve with my design was the weakness of the cardboard in the press-fit situation.  I have to cut the holes several times for the cans until the size difference was the best possible for a press-fit insertion and to deal with the addition and subtraction of cans to or from the holder.  Precision was a key to making my holder stand up to the swing test. During the process, I learned that patience yields positive results and that complex designs are not necessarily the best whenever a simple design is available.
