Activities
Design Games - http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/activities/designgames.html
- Played silly games with
people I don't really know
- It was a good way to meet
the people in the class with me and to become more
comfortable in the class
- Learned to work with my
classmates in groups, to listen to them, and to instruct
them as well
- Could any stupid idea I
come up with in class really be more embarassing than our
commercial for adult diapers?
Toy Dissection - http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/activities/toydissection.html
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/students/Activities/toydissection/secta/jhong.dcarroll.mrd3.jpg
- Learned how toys work by
taking them apart
- First hypothesized how they
worked just by observing them and guessing
- Compared the results and
documented it on paper
MBTI (personality test)
- I was able to learn a
little about myself from the results of a personality
test
- The test did not simply ask
if I was an introvert or an extrovert, but asked
questions about my preferences to determine my
personality. This means that it should be a more accurate
representation of my personality than what I may consider
myself.
- With that considered, there
are some things I might want to work on, like being more
extroverted
- But there are also some
things that I should just accept as they are, like being
judging
IronCAD Labs - http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/labs/IronCAD.html
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/labs/IronCAD2.html
- Learned the basics of
IronCAD
- Learned some basics of how
all CAD programs work
Newspaper Structures - http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/activities/designbuild.html
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/students/Activities/designbuild/structures.html#minimum
- Experience working in a
group with a very limited amount of time.
- Had to work together
quickly, come up with an idea that we could all agree on,
and express our idea clearly for another group to
interpret.
- Built another group's
concept from their written instructions and no other
communication.
- Had to choose when it was
best to follow the instructions vs. changing the design
when we felt we had a better idea.
- Had to take into
consideration all factors of design including amount of
material used, time to construct, aesthetics, and
durability.
- Had to condsider the same
factors when building the structure as well.
Cardboard Cube - http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/activities/cardboardcube.html
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/students/Activities/cubes/secta/jhw.mrd3.jpg
- Learned to use cardboard to
build three dimensional objects
- Had to share the physical
building process between two people
- Had to be very precise and
careful
Egg Drop - http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/activities/eggdrop.html
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/students/Activities/eggdrop/secta/team3a.jpg
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/students/Activities/eggdrop/secta/team3a.target.jpg
- With a limited amount of
supplies, had to create a vessel that would help the egg
survive the impact of falling from a high window
- Worked in a group of three,
with specific roles for each person
- As the industrial designer,
I had to pay extra attention to the aesthetics of the
design, without making it any less effective
Playing With Food - http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rapidproto/activities/playingwithfood.html
- A good opportunity to work
with activities directed at children
- Saw what made the projects
work or not work
- Was able to incorporate
some of these new thoughts into our plans for project

- Same as the first time, but
with new restrictions
- Since the new restrictions
were implemented in a direct attack against our record
breaking design from the original activity, we were
forced to come up with something new
- Rather than come up with an
all new, less impressive, idea, we simply modified our
original design so it would be in accordance with the new
rules
- When building the other
team's structure, we could see that it may not have
worked and we learned that we should have strayed from
the other teams design more it it would have meant the
difference between failure and success
