Pressure bottle barometer
This activity teaches children about the relationship between the pressure and temperature of a liquid. The project begins with a brief discussion about weather and pressure, and a discussion of why the TV weather reporter always talks about highs and lows. The instructor also demonstrates the relationship between pressure and temperature using balloons and hot and cold liquid. The children the build a barometer using a small clear bottle, some colored water, a straw, and some clay.
By experimenting, observing, and understanding the effects of temperature and pressure on the behavior of their bottle barometers, the children learn how barometers work and why they are useful for predicting changes in the weather.
