Thoughts for stuff done in Week 5

Newspaper Structure Aftermath/How to have a productive meeting

We all talked about how we screwed up each other's designs and how we thought we improved them. This is the place where we all found out that prefolded newspaper has nowhere near the structural properties of fresh newspaper. That and we all agreed that the Tartans newspaper sucks for building structures with. Wall Street Journal all the way!!

Project 2: (Manufacturing a gearbox?)

I don't really know what to call this yet, but here we were shown various manufacturing techniques and such. Then we were assigned a part that our group would be responsible for manufacturing, using a technique of our choice. My group ended up with the two drive shafts.

Project 2 Presentation

We met that weekend and it was decided that I would get the pleasure of delivering our first presentation. I ran around digging up information about the various techniques for a while, and then met with the group again. We all decided that CNC Machining would probably work the best for our drive shafts. Most of the other techniques used some sort of brittle plastic, or even paper, and would not hold up in torsion like metal wood. Another good reasoning was that since CNC Machining was good enough for a really important screw on a submarine, its good enough for our drive shaft!!

Here's are links to the IronCad files for our parts.
