Engineering Outreach Program
1. The engineering principle that will be learned is how to build long span sturctures using cantilevers.
2. The students will build cantilevered structures using straws and tape.
3. The age group this is designed for is middle school children.
4. They will not only learn about how to make cantilevers but also find out that materials have certain
qualities (ie. straws can be bent, twisted, etc.). Using only so many straws, the children must construct a base
and a cantelievered structure that attempts to span the longest distance. However, another challenge is they must
hold up a certain amount of weight (specially designed by a rapidprotyping machine).
5. Straw, weights (Specially designed), masking tape
6. Um...see above???
