Preparing:
· Gather all
materials needed for each set. Each set
should include a pegboard, 4 different sized gears, 4 shafts coupled with pins
attached to twisty ties, 4 washers, 3 paper plates, paint, and finally the
activity sheet.
Set-up at classroom:
· When you
arrive at the classroom split the children into groups of two or three (use
your discretion) and give each group a packet.
· Give an
introduction on gears and the use of gears in everyday life. (Please refer to the yellow handout on this
introductory information.)
· Show the
children how to attach the gears on the pegboard. This is done by putting the shaft through the gear, placing the
washer underneath the shaft, and finally positioning the shaft through the
pegboard and clipping it with the pin.
· Finally
explain the object of the exercise and go through the activity sheet with them
and explain any questions that they have with the exercise.
