How is design information transmitted to the manufacturing process?

As shown in the diagram, information is taken from a CAD file in .STL format. The .STL file is an approximation of the model using a webbing of polygons. It is essential that the interior and exterior boundaries be defined and that the model has no cavities. Some rapid prototyping firms have recently added the capability to submit jobs over the internet by uploading .STL files directly to their server.
