1. Making Cylinders

Roll one piece of newspaper into a cylinder. You can make a cylinder by putting the paper in front of you so that the short side of the paper is going up and down and the long side is going left to right. Now roll the paper from left to right so that it forms a tube and have a friend help you tape it shut.

Your cylinder should look like this:

Now, make a cylinder out of white paper and one out of colored construction paper.

2. Crushing the Cylinders

Once you have made all three cylinders, try putting a ‘Heavy’ weight on the newspaper cylinder. Does the weight crush the cylinder?

· If the weight crushes the cylinder, go to the Crush Chart on page X and write down the number ‘1’ in box that is in the ‘Cylinder’ row and in the ‘Newspaper’ column.

· If the weight did not crush the cylinder, add the ‘Heavier’ weight to the cylinder. If that crushes the cylinder, write the number ‘2’ in the box in the Crush Chart.

· If that does not crush the cylinder, add one of the ‘Heaviest’ weights to the cylinder. If that crushes the cylinder, write the number ‘3’ in the box in the Crush Chart.

· If that does not crush the cylinder, add the second ‘Heaviest’ weight to the cylinder. If that crushes the cylinder, write the number ‘4’ in the box in the Crush Chart.

· If that does not crush the cylinder, you have made a very strong cylinder! Write the number ‘5’ in the box in the Crush Chart.

Now, try to crush the white paper cylinder and the colored construction paper cylinder the same way you crushed the newspaper cylinder. Don’t forget to write down in the Crush Chart how much weight it took to crush the cylinder. Use the box in the ‘Cylinder’ row and ‘White Paper’ column for the white paper cylinder and the box in the ‘Cylinder’ row and ‘Construction Paper’ column for the colored construction paper cylinder.
