TITLE: [Central diabetes insipidus caused by pituitary metastasis of lung cancer]
PUBDATE: 20041201
A 53-year-old man admitted for thirst, polyposia, and polyuria. Large cell lung cancer T3N2M1 (Stage IV), and central diabetes insipidus caused by pituitary metastasis of lung cancer, were diagnosed. We gave him desmopressin acetate, and chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin. But pituitary metastasis increased and invaded the hypothalamus. After irradiation of the pituitary and hypothalamus, metastatic focus diminished and desmopressin acetate was tapered.

TITLE: Should oral bisphosphonates be standard of care in women with early breast cancer?
PUBDATE: 20050401
There is increasing evidence that oral clodronate has important clinical benefits in early breast cancer. Longer-term follow-up data from two out of three randomized studies have shown that adjuvant clodronate improves survival. This article outlines the results of these studies and discusses the potential role for other bisphosphonates, such as ibandronate and zoledronic acid, in the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer.

PUBDATE: 20050601
Inappropriate suppression of apoptosis is strongly implicated in tumorigenesis. Tumor development is heralded by the mutation of tumor suppressor genes and overexpression of anti-apoptotic genes permitting cell survival. Thus, inducing the apoptotic process in various ways can be applied to cancer management. Besides, angiogenesis is a crucial process for tumor growth and metastasis. New strategies targeting fundamental play-markers of the angiogenic process are currently under investigation.

Even if improved, the prognosis of chronic heart failure is still malignant, survival rate being similar to that of cancer. Due to the relevant epidemiology of the disease in the elderly, the terminal care of heart failure has a significant impact. Improving end-of-life care (by improving quality of life, quality of cure and care at the end of life and quality of dying and death) is a major challenge for health providers involved in heart failure care.

PUBDATE: 20001201
Helicobacter pylori causes peptic ulcer disease and some forms of gastric cancer; it is one of the most common chronic bacterial infections of humans. Although several prototype protein-based vaccines have shown promising results, they have not cleared infection and/or prevented reinfection. Nucleic acid vaccination offers a useful alternative to protein immunization, especially now that two complete H. pylori genome sequences are available, and facilitates the selection of antigenic targets.

TITLE: A possible prolactin-related adverse effect of certain antineoplastic anthracyclines.
PUBDATE: 20000801
Nonhormonal antineoplastic therapy can affect the endocrine system with consequent effects on the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors. Amongst anthracycline antibiotics, we have found daunorubicin and epirubicin able to acutely stimulate prolactin (PRL) secretion both in vivo, in the rat, and in vitro, from rat anterior pituitary cell cultures. Despite a similar structure, doxorubicin showed no such activity. Considering the possible role of PRL in breast cancer cell proliferation, the effects of certain anthracyclines might be viewed as an adverse drug reaction involving the anterior pituitary gland.

PUBDATE: 19980301
A 65-year-old man with rapidly progressing small cell lung cancer found in the course of renal failure is reported. The patient had a medical history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. Hemodialysis was introduced following renal failure, but pneumonia resulted in a transient exacerbation and his complaint of general fatigue did not improve. Examination for the fatigue revealed no apparent abnormalities. Three months later, he died of small cell lung cancer.

PUBDATE: 20011201
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells of unknown etiology that results in a range of clinical manifestations. LCH has been known to be associated with a variety of malignant diseases. A 7-year-old boy was treated for standard-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at age 2 years, on a Children's Cancer Group chemotherapy protocol for 3 years and developed LCH 2 years after completion of chemotherapy. The case and a review of literature on the association of LCH and ALL are presented.

TITLE: Synergistic approach to cancer therapy: exploiting interactions between anti-estrogens, retinoids, monoterpenes and tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
PUBDATE: 20000501
Non-responsiveness and toxicity are large problems encountered during cancer treatment. Utilization of compounds that synergize should increase treatment efficacy while avoiding problems of toxicity. This review explores interactions between classes of compounds, including anti-estrogens, retinoids, monoterpenes and tyrosine kinase inhibitors, that are effective independent, and how their synergistic interaction could be exploited in cancer treatment. The effects of these compounds on insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and transforming-growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) will also be examined.

TITLE: Dysfunction of the RET receptor in human cancer.
PUBDATE: 20041201
RET is the receptor for glial-derived neurotrophic factor growth factors. It is a paradigm of a single gene that causes different types of human cancer when targeted by different genetic alterations. Like other receptor tyrosine kinases, once activated, RET recruits a variety of signaling molecules that mediate biological responses. Here we review data on the signaling pathways that lead to RET-mediated cell transformation and recent evidence that manipulation of RET holds promise for thyroid cancer treatment.

PUBDATE: 19981001
Production agriculture is associated with a variety of occupational illnesses and injuries. Agricultural workers are at higher risk of death or disabling injury than most other workers. Traumatic injury commonly occurs from working with machinery or animals. Respiratory illness and health problems from exposures to farm chemicals are major concerns, and dermatoses, hearing loss, certain cancers, and zoonotic infections are important problems. Innovative means of encouraging safe work practices are being developed. Efforts are being made to reach all groups of farmworkers, including migrant and seasonal workers, farm youth, and older farmers.

We treated a 67-year-old female with hypopharyngeal cancer (T2N0) in the posterior wall, who had a complete response after two cycles of chemotherapy with docetaxel followed by radiation. Five years after this therapy she has had no recurrence and no metastasis, with preserved laryngeal framework and function. Docetaxel is useful for treating early head and neck cancer.

Inhibition of lymphangiogenesis prevents lymphatic cancer metastasis, whereas induction of lymphangiogenesis alleviates lymphedema in experimental animal models. The number of known molecular players that govern the formation and function of the microlymphatic system is growing. Here, we review the role of nitric oxide within the regulation of lymphatic formation and function and point out key unanswered questions for its translation into clinical therapy.

The future potential of these medications, in the management of oestrogen-dependent gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, fibroids and breast cancer will be discussed.

TITLE: A critical pathway for patients undergoing one-day breast cancer surgery.
PUBDATE: 19990701
As the trend of surgical procedures shifting from inpatient to outpatient settings continues, outpatient-focused standardized care processes will become more of a necessity. A multidisciplinary critical pathway (CP) for breast cancer surgery can assist care providers in meeting patients' educational and psychosocial needs. The CP document discussed in this article takes into account the expedient nature of outpatient surgery and spans the continuum of care from the surgical clinic to the postoperative homecare visit. Integrating homecare nursing improves the quality and consistency of care.
