PUBDATE: 19911201
A study is presented of 51 patients (age 52-77 years) suffering of uterine body cancer with marked extragenital pathology. It is shown that treatment of inoperable cancer of the uterine body using the SELECTRON apparatus for contact irradiation (cesium-137 source, 066-MEV photons). With this method exact dose control is possible. The preferred regime of dose fractionation in intracavitary radiation of endometrium cancer is a single dose of 1000 cGr weekly and a summary dose of 7000-8000 cGr.

TITLE: MRI: a role in clinical trials.
PUBDATE: 20010601
The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. Breast-conserving therapy is replacing the Halstedian concept of "en bloc" resection. Difficulties in detection, pre- and postoperative planning and follow up continue to challenge the clinician. Women at high risk present a significant clinical dilemma. MRI technology in many of these areas is providing more information about detection, tumor size, extent, and response to treatment. The careful and thoughtful inclusion of MRI in clinical trials may help continue the advancement of breast cancer care. J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2001;13:837-841.

PUBDATE: 19910601
Pickled vegetables are daily food consumed in the high-risk areas for esophageal cancer in China. We analyzed the nitrosamine content of Linxian pickles by GC/TEA and found that trace amounts of six nitrosamines (NDMA, NDEA, NMBA, NMAMBA, NDPA, NPYR) were present, with the highest concentrations being NDMA and NDEA (1.7 and 1.9 micrograms/kg wet weight respectively). The average level of nitrosamine precursors, such as nitrate (111.22 mg/L), nitrite (0.152 mg/L) and secondary amines (4.223 mg/L), in pickled vegetables were determined, and their pH values ranged from 3 to 5.

The correlation between dose values from dose-volume histograms (DVHs) and dose values from dose-wall histograms (DWHs) of the rectum tissue of patient with uterine cervix cancer was determined. The minimum dose in 2 cm3 in the high-dose region of the DVH is a good estimate of the dose in the rectum wall.

PUBDATE: 19910401
Approximately 25% of all 'discrete' breast lesions are fibroadenomas or breast cysts and they more commonly cause a breast lump than breast cancer. Despite their frequency, their natural history and relationship to subsequent breast cancer have not been clearly defined, although it would appear that palpable breast cysts, but not fibroadenomas, are associated with some increased risk of breast cancer. The diagnosis of these two entities is now possible by fine needle aspiration and excision of these lesions is only indicated in certain circumstances.

PUBDATE: 19960201
Cancer control in any part of the world has to be a multi-directional effort addressed in a holistic manner. The general impression that cancer control means only collation of epidemiological data and efforts at primary prevention needs to be redefined because preventive and educative oncology, though an important component of cancer control, can achieve long-term goals only after 20 years or more. Along with such long-term objectives, methodology needs to be developed which takes care of immediate and recent needs in early diagnosis, effective treatment, and appropriate basic research for the ultimate control and cure of cancer. A holistic approach to the cancer control effort will, therefore, need the combined skills of many different specialists.

Sheep pulmonary adenomatosis (SPA) is a contagious bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma of sheep associated with an exogenous type D/B retrovirus known as jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV). SPA represents a unique model for lung cancer, and studies on its aetiopathogenesis can provide further insight into the mechanisms of epithelial neoplasms.

PUBDATE: 19950801
Data on the use of radiotherapy (i.e., external irradiation and/or intracavitary radioactive implants) in the first course of treatment were examined for all 1286 invasive cervical cancer cases diagnosed between 1983 and 1990 among Connecticut residents. These data, from a population-based cancer registry, reflect actual treatment practices in the geographic area under study. Use of radiotherapy declined from 62% in 1983 to 43% in 1990 (trend test P < 0.001); for "local"-stage cancers, the decline was from 50% in 1983 to 27% in 1990 (P < 0.001). Surveys are needed on physicians' attitudes and decisions regarding alternative treatments for cervical cancer.

Testis cancer affects 2-3 men per every 100,000 in the United States, making it the most common solid tumor of men in the 20-35-year-old age range. Since the average age of active duty military personnel is included in the age range of those at greatest risk for germ cell testis cancer, it is of pertinent clinical importance to physicians who treat these young patients. The National Naval Medical Center has been using cisplatin-based protocols since the time of their introduction. This study reviews the success of treating these patients and examines the treatment failures.

PUBDATE: 19911201
Staging of nonseminomatous testicular cancers, as with other tumors, renders important prognostic information and is necessary for making appropriate treatment recommendations. There is no universally accepted staging system for testis cancer, however. Despite the lack of uniformity, most of the staging systems in use today are capable of segregating patients into a "good-risk" or "poor-risk" category. The former group experiences cure less frequently and are appropriate candidates for investigational treatment. Tumor bulk is the most important prognostic factor in virtually all staging systems.

PUBDATE: 19920201
The greatest risk for most cancer patients is inadequate treatment of their disease. Although mediastinal radiotherapy is a safer procedure than it was 20 years ago, it still may damage the thoracic viscera, including the heart. Cardiovascular problems tend to present subtly years later, when the patient may not recall the prior radiation or may not deem it significant. An awareness of this long latency period and of the wide spectrum of heart disease that may result from radiotherapy is essential for management of these patients.

Several abdomino-Pelvic surgical procedures can cause ejaculatory failure or impotence. Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testis cancer is followed by loss of ejaculation if bilateral. In low stage cancers, monolateral procedure is associated with maintenance of ejaculation in most patients. Evaluation of seminal fluid before surgery is essential for cryopreservation and artificial insemination erectile impotence is consequent to section of "nervi erigentes" in pelvic surgery for cancer. Careful anatomic dissection can spare these nerves but oncologic radicality should be always kept in mind.
