TITLE: Vegetables, fruits, and colorectal cancer risk: what should we believe?
PUBDATE: 20011201
Among dietary factors implicated in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC), the inverse relationship between vegetable and fruit consumption and CRC risk has long been believed to represent the strongest epidemiologic evidence. However, recently published large prospective studies have produced conflicting results and the results of one randomized intervention human trial do not support the protective role of vegetable and fruit consumption in colorectal carcinogenesis. Conflicting data with regard to the effect of dietary factors, including vegetables and fruits, on CRC risk likely reflect inherent, probably irresolvable, limitations of currently available tools to detect a real beneficial or harmful effect associated with these factors.

PUBDATE: 20051001
Cancer patients receiving antibodies as monotherapy have benefited from these treatments. However, significant improvements can be made that should make the therapy more effective. Applying lessons learned from the natural oligoclonal antibody response that cancer patients mount to their own tumours suggests that cocktails of monoclonal antibodies could be formulated, which may be more effective in treating cancers. The next phase of antibody immunotherapy will include cocktails of monoclonal antibodies. Various requirements for human antibody cocktails are discussed, as well as potential limitations of this approach.

PUBDATE: 20051201
We reported a case of lung cancer with polyarthropathy induced by human parvovirus B19. A 60-year-old female with lung cancer was admitted to our hospital with polyarthropathy similar to rheumatoid arthritis. Although the abnormal accumulation of 99mTc-MDP in the bone scan film and rheumatoid factor positive were detected before operation, we diagnosed polyarthropathy induced by parvovirus B19 through the detection of parvovirus B19 IgM and B19 DNA. The joint pain gradually improved after surgical treatment for lung cancer.

The development of novel 'new generation' vaccine systems that is based on proteins, peptides or DNA is of great current interest. However, due to the lower efficiencies of these new generation vaccines, they are seldomly used alone. Rather, their formulations often contain adjuvants, either to enhance the immune responses or to reduce dosing. The present chapter will provide a brief overview of the recent advances in peptide-based cancer vaccine adjuvants, focusing mainly on Liposome-Protamine-DNA (LPD) nanoparticle-mediated antigen delivery.

PUBDATE: 20010901
Polyps in the gall bladder are detected in 4-5% of the population and most of them are benign. However, they can be premalignant and the prognosis for gall bladder carcinoma is still poor. As with other cancers, treatment at an early stage is therefore, considered essential to improve the prognosis. Because of the very low morbidity after laparoscopic cholecystectomy we recommend laparoscopic cholecystectomy when a polyp in the gall bladder is detected by ultrasonography. A wait and see attitude with repeated ultrasonography twice a year may be chosen, if there are contra-indications to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. If the lesion increases in size, cholecystectomy should be performed.

The mutual goal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the American Cancer Society partnership is to provide patients and the generalpublic with state of the art cancer treatment information in understandable language. This treatment information is based on the professional guidelines developed by the NCCN. It is intended to assist patients in a discussion with their doctor about the treatment that is best for their specific situation. Part I of these guidelines addressed melanoma risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, stages, prevention, and clinical trials (Vol. 17, No 2, pp. 119-131). Part II describes decision trees for evaluation and treatment.

PUBDATE: 19990901
Synthesis and antitumor activity of goniofufurone analogues 15, 16, 17, 33, and 46 is reported. Key step in the synthesis is Pd (II) mediated oxidative cyclisation of vinyl-(hydroxy) furans 18, 19 to the corresponding lactols 32, 43. Cytotoxicities of 15, 16, 17, 33, and 46 tested against six human cancer cell lines are reported. Change of stereochemistry at C-5, C-6 and C-7 position of goniofufurone (1) did not enhance the cytotoxicities significantly.

Although the association between postmenopausal hormone use and breast cancer has not been clarified, there is nothing indefinite about the survival advantage conferred by hormone replacement therapy. Cardiovascular and fracture-related deaths so outnumber breast cancer deaths that even women with family histories of the latter are likely to benefit from low-potency estrogen replacement.

PUBDATE: 19990401
Pulmonary tumor embolism is a rare cause of respiratory failure in patients with cancer and is only infrequently diagnosed during life. Chest radiographs are usually normal. Dilated and beaded peripheral pulmonary arteries may be present on computed tomography scans. The authors describe an unusual case of pulmonary tumor embolism presenting on computed tomography scans as bilateral, peripheral, wedge-shaped opacities. On autopsy, these opacities corresponded to areas of pulmonary infarction.

The synthesis of benzopyranic simplified analogues of dibenzopyranic natural compounds is described, together with the access to a precursor of a new furobenzopyranic natural product. These natural products have anti-cancer activity. The 1,3-diacetoxy-2-acetyl-4-(3-hydroxy-3-methylbut-1-enyl)benzene synthone is used as a common precursor to these structures.

PUBDATE: 20051001
Essiac is a popular complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that is utilized by many cancer patients in North America. Much anecdotal reporting exists about its cancer-fighting qualities, but so far no clinical trials have been preformed to validate those claims. We describe here the case of a 64-year-old man whose hormone-refractory prostate cancer responded well to Essiac tea.

This review will summarize recent advances made in the development of kinase inhibitors to highlight emerging issues and the strategies by which they being addressed.
