TITLE: Hemoccult screening for colorectal cancer.
PUBDATE: 19881201
A community hemoccult screening project for colorectal cancer resulted in the processing of 18,198 specimens. Positive test results were reported in 3 percent of the total, which ultimately resulted in the identification of 20 colorectal malignancies (0.1 percent) and 53 benign polyps (0.3 percent). The number of malignancies and polyps identified was disappointingly low. Our findings would challenge the concept of unsupervised mass screening from the viewpoint of cost-effectiveness; however, because of the numerous voluntary services and supplies, this particular project was useful in educating the public about early colon cancer detection.

TITLE: Electron beam irradiation in treatment of skin carcinoma.
PUBDATE: 19890301
Thirty seven cases of carcinoma of skin treated with electron-beam irradiation over a period of three years have been analysed retrospectively. Majority of lesions were in head and neck and basal-cell carcinoma was the commonest histological type. Of twenty-one patients followed, seventeen (81%) achieved complete remission and remained disease free for a period of one to three years. Cosmetic results were excellent. Role of electron-beam in the management of these superficial cancers and its advantage over the conventional radiation therapy methods have been highlighted. Radiation therapy utilising electron-beams form a very useful modality in the management of skin cancers, especially those arising in head and neck.

TITLE: [Radioimmunological methods in the diagnosis of metastases of thyroid cancer]
PUBDATE: 19870601
The concentrations of thyrotropin, thyroglobulin, calcitonin and carcinoembryonic antigen were raised in the blood of thyroid cancer patients. The occurrence of relapses of regional and distant metastases was accompanied by a sharp increase in the levels of thyrotropin, thyroglobulin and carcinoembryonic antigen permitting the recommendation of these tests for the diagnosis of distant metastases in the absence of local spread of a process. Simultaneous determination of the levels of thyroglobulins and carcinoembryonic antigen was the most informative for defining metastatic involvement of the osseous system.

TITLE: Biological and therapeutic potential of membrane lipid modification in tumors.
PUBDATE: 19870901
The membrane fatty acid composition of cancer cells can be modified either in culture or during growth in animals without disrupting basic membrane or cellular integrity. Only fatty acids are affected; no changes occur in membrane cholesterol, phospholipid, or protein content. There are changes in membrane physical properties and certain cellular functions, including carrier-mediated transport, receptor binding, ion channels, and eicosanoid production. Fatty acid modification also can enhance the sensitivity of the cells to hyperthermia and Adriamycin. This technique provides a new approach to understanding the membrane properties of neoplastic cells. Membrane fatty acid modification also may be of potential value as a therapeutic approach designed to augment the cytotoxicity of other antineoplastic therapies.

Thirty evaluable patients with recurrent and/or metastatic cervical cancer were treated with a combination of cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, and cis-platinum. We observed no complete response and three partial responses (10%). One year survival rate was 45%. CAP combination did not prove to be more effective than single agent cis-platinum.

TITLE: Antiandrogen effects in models of androgen responsive cancer.
PUBDATE: 19881001
The ability of antiandrogens to antagonize androgen effects in androgen responsive tissues is well established. Antiandrogens may diminish in vivo or in vitro proliferation of some androgen responsive cancer cells without causing cessation of multiplication. These model studies are representative of clinical experience in treatment of human prostate cancer with antiandrogen therapy. Recent studies in the AXC/SSh rat prostate cancer model show that these cancer cells elaborate polypeptide growth factors which stimulate their proliferation. If growth factor production by these cells is androgen independent, this may provide an explanation for failure of androgen ablation or antiandrogen treatment to effectively halt prostate cancer cell proliferation.

TITLE: Primary hemochromatosis in childhood.
PUBDATE: 19871001
Primary hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder rarely recognized in childhood; its long-term consequences include cirrhosis and liver cancer. We report a family with primary hemochromatosis affecting three generations, including a 7-year-old child and a 29-month-old child; these are the youngest children with primary hemochromatosis yet reported. The pathophysiology, genetics, and clinical findings of this disorder are reviewed. Serum ferritin and transferrin saturation are useful screening tests; definitive diagnosis, however, depends on determination of hepatic iron content. A plan for evaluating and treating affected patients is proposed. Physicians caring for children must learn to recognize this potentially treatable disorder.

TITLE: Conjunctival map biopsy to determine pagetoid spread.
PUBDATE: 19860701
Sebaceous adenocarcinoma (meibomian gland cancer) can be localized at times to one specific area of the eyelid; at other times, it spreads diffusely by pagetoid invasion throughout the conjunctiva. The pagetoid spread is often impossible to visualize. I used a map biopsy of the conjunctiva to determine the extent of involvement of sebaceous adenocarcinoma in 12 patients. Sixteen conjunctival biopsy specimens were taken from various areas of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva. An analysis of these specimens helped to delineate the area of tumor involvement, which aided in determining whether to treat these cases by full-thickness eyelid resection or orbital exenteration.

PUBDATE: 19860301
The purpose of this paper is to define the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the head and neck as seen at the Free University Hospital, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in the last six years, according to the latest revised classification system of the International Union against Cancer (UICC, 1982). In addition, male to female ratios, relative frequencies at the various sites, age distribution, incidence of second or third primary and the relationship of distant metastases to the nodal metastases and the T-stage of the primary lesion are reported. These incidences are compared with those in other countries and the major differences are discussed.

PUBDATE: 19880201
In this secondary analysis of data from the National Hospice Study (NHS), a new measure, quality of death (QOD), was developed by weighting reports of cancer patients' last 3 days of life by what patients wanted their last 3 days to be like. Using analysis of covariance, the QOD scores were higher for terminally ill patients in hospices (either home-care [HC] or hospital-based [HB]) than similar patients who received conventional care (CC). The results are discussed in terms of verification of the hospice philosophy and other uses for a quality of death measure.

PUBDATE: 19871001
Arylsulphatase-A and arylsulphatase-B heterogeneity in normal and cancer patient urine was investigated using high resolution agarose isoelectricfocusing. Normal urine contained up to nine forms of arylsulphatase-A activity with isoelectric points from 4.45 to 5.43 and at least 5 forms of arylsulphatase-B between 8.58 and 9.15 along with a broad zone of activity between pH 6.5 and 7.6. Although cancer patients had significantly higher levels of arylsulphatase-A and arylsulphatase-B activity, their pattern of activity was essentially the same as for the normals with only minor quantitative differences in some peaks.

TITLE: [The immunological role of carotenoids in the prevention of cancer]
PUBDATE: 19860501
Epidemiological studies have suggested that the intake of green-yellow vegetables decrease the risk of cancer. Vitamin A, which is abundantly present in green-yellow vegetables in the form of provitamin A, was demonstrated to inhibit chemical and viral-carcinogenesis in experimental animals. However, little is known about the mechanism of anti-carcinogenic effect of vitamin A. Our data seem to support a hypothesis that vitamin A may contribute to the prevention of cancer by augmenting an immunosurveillance system. We found that vitamin A and provitamin A, beta-carotene, enhanced tumor immunity using a syngeneic murine tumor system.
