TITLE: Bateman domains and adenosine derivatives form a binding contract.
PUBDATE: 20040101
Conserved pairs of CBS sequence motifs (named after cystathionine beta-synthase) found in a wide variety of proteins associate to form Bateman domains. A new study establishes that Bateman domains bind adenosyl compounds and regulate IMP dehydrogenase, CBS, chloride channels, and AMP-activated protein kinase. This discovery reveals how mutations in CBS sequences in these proteins cause hereditary diseases and provides a rich vista of conceptual opportunities for therapies in energy metabolism, obesity, diabetes, cancer, antivirals, and immunosuppression.

Ocular metastasis in patients with esophageal cancer is quite rare. Several cases have been reported in the literature, but no successful treatments for such metastases have ever been described. We herein report a case of esophageal cancer in which the ocular metastasis was controlled by systemic chemotherapy.

A new series of 2,6-dibenzylamino-3,5-dicyanopyridines were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activity toward cell lines of nine different types of human cancer. Some of newly prepared compounds demonstrated remarkable anticancer activity against most of the tested subpanel tumor cell lines.

PUBDATE: 20030401
Population-based screening seems to be a common-sense strategy for controlling cancer, but recent reports have raised controversy concerning the benefits of common screening procedures. Intense efforts to develop and evaluate novel screening technologies are underway; however, effective use of any screening method must take into account any underlying biological considerations. What are these biological issues, and what challenges do clinicians face in screening for common cancers?

PUBDATE: 20050501
For ensuring success of gene and cell based therapies it is of prime importance to develop technology for non-invasive monitoring of the location and duration of gene expression, distribution and targeting of therapeutically engineered cells and vector particles in vivo. A number of advances have been achieved in high resolution, in vivo imaging methods, such as bioluminescence imaging, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and various fluorescence imaging techniques, including fluorescence mediated tomography (FMT) and near infrared fluorescence (NIRF) reflectance imaging. In this review we will discuss different imaging modalities that have found applications in gene and cell therapies of cancer.

PUBDATE: 20030701
The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a highly sensitive and specific method for the detection of genetic material. Over the last few years, this method has been used increasingly for the molecular detection of disease. This report demonstrates the use of PCR in the diagnosis of bladder cancer. The principles of the method are shown by describing the detection of p53, CD44 and telomerase, as well as in microsatellite analysis.

Treatment for patients who are dying from cancer and are suffering with physiologic and existential symptoms is an important and valuable skill for health care providers. However, the treatment for suffering at the end of life and the use of sedation for comfort often are misunderstood. The following is a discussion of the clinical skills and ethical considerations that health care providers should have when treating terminal patients with cancer.

This article describes the common resistance patterns that occur in ongoing cancer support groups. These resistances, which can often go unrecognized, are a normal part of group development and group life in such groups, rather than the result of a few "problem" group members. The thesis of this article posits that the identification and working through of these resistances creates openings to deeper engagement among members and to overall greater group cohesion. Technical guidelines are offered for working with these resistances in the group-as-a-whole, in members, and also in the therapist.

TITLE: [Tumor angiogenesis]
PUBDATE: 20030501
Recent advances in the understanding of the molecular control of angiogenesis have shown that this process is essential for tumor development and spread. The identification of a great many of ligands, receptors or intracellular signalling molecules have allowed to unravel some of the regulatory loops involved. Especially noteworthy is the fact that developmental regulators seem now to play a role in tumor angiogenesis. Furthermore, these studies have allowed to identify novel therapeutic targets and to develop novel molecules and strategies for cancer therapy. This indicates that tumor angiogenesis is at present a major focus of cancer research.

TITLE: Why a breast boost should remain a controversial aspect of routine breast conservation management in Australia and New Zealand in 2002.
PUBDATE: 20030301
Two randomized trials have recently shown a statistically significant improvement in local control when a boost is employed in the conservative treatment of early breast cancer. However, unresolved issues of cost effectiveness, potentially increased toxicity and the inability to automatically generalize these results to Australian and New Zealand practice remain. In view of these unresolved controversies, the St George and Wollongong hospitals breast boost trial (SGW trial) will continue to recruit.
