PUBDATE: 20020501
Transvaginal US is often the initial imaging examination for women with dysfunctional (postmenopausal or intermenstrual) uterine bleeding. However, once the diagnosis of endometrial cancer has been made, contrast-enhanced MRI should be performed in patients who require multifactorial assessment (eg, depth of myometrial invasion, cervical involvement, lymph node metastasis). The results of contrast-enhanced MRI help distinguish patients who need more aggressive therapy and referral to a gynecologic oncologist from those who will do well treated by a community gynecologist.

Resveratrol analogs were newly synthesized and evaluated for cytotoxicity in cultured human lung and colon cancer cells. 3,5,4-Trimethoxy-trans-stilbene and 3,5,2',4'-tetramethoxy-trans-stilbene were found to be more potent rather than resveratrol. 3,4,5-Trimethoxy-4'-bromo-cis-stilbene was the most active among the test compounds.

PUBDATE: 20030301
Advances in immunoconjugate technology have revitalized the "magic bullet" concept of immunotherapeutics for the treatment of cancer. The growing availability of "human" antibodies, the increased epitope repertoire due to genomics and proteomics efforts, and advances in the means of identification and production of tumor-specific antibodies have greatly increased the potential for cancer therapeutic opportunities. Furthermore, the realization that effector molecule potency must be sufficiently high to be effective at concentrations that might realistically be delivered to the tumor site on an antibody carrier has greatly spurred the fields of medicinal chemistry and radionuclide chelate chemistry to produce such molecules.

TITLE: [Long-term side effects of chemotherapy for testicular cancer]
PUBDATE: 20020701
Since the advent of cisplatin-based chemotherapy in the 1970s, a majority of metastatic testicular cancer patients have been cured with chemotherapy and surgery. The high curability of testicular cancer, along with the young age of afflicted patients, can result in patients living for many years after the chemotherapy. Thus, the assessment of late effects of chemotherapy is clinically important in testicular cancer patients. This article summarizes the literature regarding the long-term side effects, and reviews approaches to the amelioration of these side effects.

Assessing the health risks of complex mixtures of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons such as diesel fumes and asphalt or bitumen continues to be a major challenge for occupational and environmental health scientists. The special Asphalt issue of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine (Cancer Mortality Among European Asphalt Workers (Am.J.Ind.Med. Volume 43, Number 1, 2003) presented the results of a major multi-country epidemiological study of a group of workers exposed to one common commercial PAH mixture, asphalt or bitumen.

Testicular cancer is one of the few tumors which are curable even at an advanced stage. This has been achieved both by the use of platinum based chemotherapy and by the interdisciplinary approach by urologists, internal oncologists and radio-oncologists. In 1988, the Interdisciplinary Testicular Cancer Study Group was founded. The aim of this group is to initiate clinical trials to improve the results in the treatment of this tumor. Furthermore, the group has published evidenced-based national and international guidelines for testicular cancer. This article gives an overview on the work of the group including current studies.

The content of activated (phosphorylated) form of proteinkinase B in tumors and homologous tissues of 46 patients with breast cancer was measured by enzyme immunoassay. Activity of proteinkinase B was increased in tumors of 48% patients in comparison with homologous histologically unchanged tissue. Activity of proteinkinase B in hormone-dependent mammary tumors was significantly higher than in tumor tissue from patients with negative receptor status.

A direct (noniterative) reconstruction algorithm for electrical impedance tomography in the two-dimensional (2-D), cross-sectional geometry is reviewed. New results of a reconstruction of a numerically simulated phantom chest are presented. The algorithm is based on the mathematical uniqueness proof by A. I. Nachman [1996] for the 2-D inverse conductivity problem. In this geometry, several of the clinical applications include monitoring heart and lung function, diagnosis of pulmonary embolus, diagnosis of pulmonary edema, monitoring for internal bleeding, and the early detection of breast cancer.

We evaluated arylsulphatase activity in 52 women with breast cancer. In women with breast cancer this enzyme activity is 2,5-fold higher than in healthy women. After operation and chemiotherapy arylsulphatase activity decreased to normal values. There is correlation between enzyme activity and tumor size and number of metastases. In group with bigger tumor and higher number of metastases arylsulphatase activity is markedly higher.

PUBDATE: 20040301
Fulvestrant is a new type of oestrogen receptor (ER) antagonist with no agonist activity and a novel pharmacological profile. Fulvestrant has been shown to significantly reduce cellular levels of the ER and progesterone receptor in both preclinical studies and in clinical trials of postmenopausal women with primary breast cancer. This paper reviews the pharmacokinetics and metabolism of fulvestrant, which support the rationale for drug delivery as a single, once-monthly intramuscular injection, and show that this agent has minimal potential to be the subject, or cause, of significant cytochrome p450-mediated drug interactions.

A brief review of the literature regarding HPV-related cancer in HIV-infected patients is presented and therapeutic options are discussed.

A 62-year-old man consulted our hospital complaining of macroscopic hematuria. Intravenous urography showed a dilated terminal portion of the left ureter resembling a cobra head. Cystoscopy revealed multiple tumors on the ureterocele. There were no metastatic lesions on CT and MRI. Transurethral resection of the tumor and the ureterocele was performed and the pathological examination revealed transitional cell carcinoma on the ureterocele. This is the 4th case of urothelial cancer on a simple ureterocele reported in Japan.

Metastatic prostate cancer is an uncurable disease. Treatment is only palliative. Median survival of patients is 3 years. Prostate cancer is an hormonodependent cancer, androgen blockade is the most active treatment. However hormone resistance occurs after a median interval of 2 years. The major symptom is pain, others are urinary obstruction, neurological complications of bone metastases and hematological disorders. Androgen deprivation is the first-line treatment, impotency and osteoporosis being the main side effects. Other treatments are radiotherapy, radiopharmaceutics and chemotherapy. The most important treatment issue is quality of life.

Prostate cancer (Ca P), the most commonly diagnosed male cancer, will be a health care issue that will have a significant impact on the American health care system as the population of the United States continues to age. It is anticipated that the number of men diagnosed with Ca P will continue to increase each year. Screening, diagnosis, and treatment modalities for Ca P in men over 65 years of age are discussed.
