TITLE: Negative binomial additive models.
PUBDATE: 20000301
The generalized additive model is extended to handle negative binomial responses. The extension is complicated by the fact that the negative binomial distribution has two parameters and is not in the exponential family. The methodology is applied to data involving DNA adduct counts and smoking variables among ex-smokers with lung cancer. A more detailed investigation is made of the parametric relationship between the number of adducts and years since quitting while retaining a smooth relationship between adducts and the other covariates.

TITLE: Aggression: destructive and constructive aspects.
PUBDATE: 20000401
The concept of aggression was long relegated to the shadow of the libido in psychoanalytic theory, placed among the negative affects by some theoreticians, denied the role of a primary drive among leading writers in clinical psychology, brought to the fore as an adaptive force in ethology, and proved to be a decisive factor in the development of psychosomatic ailments. The second part of the paper reviews experiments using projective techniques, showing that highly creative subjects as opposed to ones low in creativity seem inclined to accept their aggressive impulses. A total denial of these impulses has been typical of women with breast cancer.

PUBDATE: 20000501
The aim of the study is to define the systemic prognostic factors in the neoplasm according to thermodynamic theory of cancer a the self-organising dissipative structure. As the local, so called "specific" factors seem to be not adequate one should look for more general ones. It is shown, that such general factors as hormonal state of women' organism, preterm births, lactation, infertility treatment are important.

PUBDATE: 20000301
The authors present the case of a 17-year-old girl with tuberous sclerosis (TS) who presented with symptoms of intussusception. Although endoscopically diagnosed with multiple colonic polyps, presumed to be hamartomas, and an invasive rectal adenocarcinoma, postoperative pathology findings confirmed the rectal cancer and showed multiple colonic adenomas. Multiple colonic adenomatous polyps in a young girl with tuberous sclerosis is extremely rare. Furthermore, we believe that this is the first report of an invasive adenocarcinoma of the large intestine occurring in a patient with TS.

TITLE: Effects of temperature on polyunsaturation in cytostatic lipids of Haslea ostrearia.
PUBDATE: 20010301
Unusual chemicals produced by the-'blue oyster' diatom, Haslea ostrearia, include the water-soluble blue pigment marennine and numerous polyunsaturated sesterterpene oils or haslenes. Aqueous extracts of the alga exhibit in vitro and in vivo activities against human lung cancer cells and anti-HIV effects. Here we report that three haslenes also demonstrate in vitro cytostatic action against a human lung cancer cell line. The most active haslene is the most unsaturated and unsaturation in the haslenes increases with increasing algal growth temperature.

An extract of the aerial parts from Alomia myriadenia Schultz-Bip. ex Baker (Asteraceae) showed significant cytotoxicity against a panel of human cancer cell lines in a screening of extracts from Brazilian Atlantic Forest plant species. Employing a bioassay-linked HPLC-electrospray/MS method, followed by semi-preparative HPLC, the active component was isolated and characterized as a mixture of epimers of the labdane diterpene 12S,16-dihydroxy-ent-labda-7,13-dien-15,16-olide.

The methods of assay in body fluids of 1-beta-alkyl, 1-beta-phenyl and 1-beta-acyl glucuronic acids ("glucuronide conjugates") have been reviewed. Most of the 78 references cited (from the literature of the period 1990-1997) concern the glucuronide conjugates of drug metabolites, and these have been considered, for reasons of accessibility, within sections of individual drug classes such as analgesics, anti-cancer agents and opioids. Other glucuronide conjugates are considered under "miscellaneous compounds". A few gas chromatography and capillary electrophoresis methods are described, but the major technique of assay (62 citations) is reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography.

Imaging of colorectal cancer is primarily accomplished with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These two modalities have been used for more than a decade in imaging both primary and metastatic colorectal cancer. Recent advances in the CT and MRI technologies are redefining the precise role of these imaging modalities in the work-up and evaluation of patients with colorectal cancer.

PUBDATE: 20000801
Data on postmastectomy breast reconstructive surgery were examined for 52,357 female breast cancers that were treated with mastectomy and diagnosed in geographic areas covered by the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. The proportion of cancers that involved reconstruction varied in these geographic areas in each age group (under age 70 years) by a factor of about four or five, even after adjustment for stage at diagnosis, marital status, and poverty rate of county of residence at diagnosis. Studies are needed to explain the large differences in reconstruction rates by geographic area.

PUBDATE: 20000201
Cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome that is characterized by retinal degeneration. Two cDNA clones, recoverin and tubby-like protein 1 (TULP1), were isolated from a human retinal cDNA library by using serum from a CAR patient as the probe. Both recoverin and TULP1 are retina-specific protein, and TULP1 is a member of tubby gene family. A determination of the recognized amino acid sequence of TULP1 by the patient serum and immunohistochemical studies on the distribution of TULP1 in the retina were done in this study.

TITLE: Breast conservation therapy--surgical aspects.
PUBDATE: 20000501
Breast conservation therapy is now accepted as an alternative to mastectomy for early stage breast cancer. In 1991 the NIH recommended a regime consisting of the excision of a primary tumour with a 1 cm-margin of breast tissue around and an axillary node dissection followed by postoperative administration of 45-50 Gy irradiation. Although this regime is popular in most centres, several issues remain controversial. These are (1) selection of cases, (2) surgical technique, (3) histopathology and radiology, and (4) adjutant therapy. In this presentation I shall deal mainly with the surgical aspects of breast conservation.

TITLE: IGFs and IGFBPs: surrogate markers for diagnosis and surveillance of tumour growth?
PUBDATE: 20011001
Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), IGF receptors, and IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs) constitute the IGF system. Comprehensive data indicate that these factors play a pivotal role in tumorigenesis. Epidemiological data indicate that cancer risk is associated with high serum IGF-I values. Because dysregulation of the IGF system is a frequent pattern in malignancy, IGFs/IGFBPs might represent novel tumour markers that could be useful both for diagnosis and surveillance.

Only one carrier was found. These results provide no evidence in favour of an excess risk of breast cancer associated with heterozygosity for classical AT mutations, but remain consistent with a maximum 2.4-fold increased risk.

TITLE: A method to study intracellular ice nucleation.
PUBDATE: 19980201
The thermodynamics of intracellular ice nucleation are important in low-temperature biology for understanding and controlling the process of cell destruction by freezing. We have developed a new apparatus and technique for studying the physics of intracellular ice nucleation. Employing the principle of directional solidification in conjunction with light microscopy, we can generate information on the temperature at which ice nucleates intracellularly as a function of the thermal history the cells experience. The methodology is introduced, and results with primary prostatic cancer cells are described.
