TITLE: Bone-anchored reconstruction of the irradiated head and neck cancer patient.
PUBDATE: 19930401
Titanium implants in facial bones for retention of epitheses or dental bridges were used for reconstruction in cancer patients after tumor surgery. Even heavily irradiated bones could integrate the implants and bear the load from the epithesis. No major complications, such as wound infection, fistulation, or osteoradionecrosis, occurred after implant surgery. There was, however, an increased loss of implants with time after irradiation, especially in the orbital region. When hyperbaric oxygen was used as adjunctive treatment, implant losses were reduced.

PUBDATE: 19920801
The inflammatory sensory polyganglionopathies are a group of uncommon neurologic disorders primarily affecting dorsal root ganglion cells and their processes. Subdivided into malignant and nonmalignant inflammatory sensory polyganglionopathy, these conditions are important in the differential diagnosis of sensory neuropathy. The clinical significance of malignant inflammatory sensory polyganglionopathy, a paraneoplastic syndrome, rests in the discovery of subclinical cancer, which may produce antineuronal nuclear antibodies directed against the dorsal root ganglion cell and other neurons resulting in characteristic neurologic deficits. Prompt recognition of these distinctive signs and symptoms may result in early diagnosis and improved patient survival and lead to a better understanding of immune-mediated neurologic disease.

PUBDATE: 19900201
In pleural effusions, histologically proven to be malignant in 13 patients with small cell lung cancer, the immunocytological profile of tumour cells, together with the distribution of the lymphocyte subpopulations, were established. In all cases, tumor cells were demonstrable with the monoclonal antibodies EMA, HEA-125, Sam 2, 6, 8 and 10. In contrast, conventional cytology was positive in only 6 of the 13 cases. As in other malignant or inflammatory effusions, phenotyping of the lymphocytes revealed an elevated T4/T8 ratio in comparison with the normal value for peripheral blood.

Two patients with epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica recessiva who had squamous cell carcinoma are presented. Case 1 is a 40-year-old woman who had ulcers on her left lower leg. Case 2 is a 42-year-old man who had a tumor on his left first toe. Wide surgical excision with skin coverage by autograft was performed in case 1. Amputation of the toe in case 2 was performed. A review of the cases of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica associated with cancer reported in Japan is also presented.

Familial breast cancers represent about 10% of all cases of breast cancers. A predisposition locus has been located in the 17q21 chromosomal region. Nineteen French breast and breast-ovarian cancer families were tested for linkage with five highly polymorphic 17q markers. The five breast-ovarian cancer families as a group give positive evidence for linkage, whereas the 14 breast cancer families do not. Heterogeneity of linkage of familial breast cancer is significant in France and supports the existence of more than one susceptibility gene.

TITLE: Mammography in younger women.
PUBDATE: 19910801
Breast imaging is not frequently performed in women aged 35 years or younger for several reasons. Approximately half of the radiographic examinations of a breast symptom give normal results because the expected density of the breast in younger women may obscure abnormalities. Results from biopsies performed subsequent to positive mammogram findings confirm the predominance of benign lesions; cancers are rarely observed. After reviewing the main breast diseases that occur in the 20- to 35-year-old age group, we evaluated the accuracy of mammography in diagnosing malignancy, and attempted to summarize guidelines for breast imaging in young women, whose breasts are quite sensitive to radiation.

These surveys were performed in areas where there was a potential for both occupational and general public exposure.

PUBDATE: 19910201
Metastases to the adrenal glands are common in patients with cancer, but among those affected, hyperreninemic hypoaldosteronism is noted very rarely. A case of hyperreninemic hypoaldosteronism secondary to metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma is reported. Laboratory data revealed selective aldosterone deficiency with hyperreninemia. Biopsy documented replacement of the adrenal glands with metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma. A review of the literature disclosed that the present case was an extremely rare one of its kind.

We can fully expect that the information from the genome project, combined with epidemiologic and other genetic studies, will pinpoint the series of events, in germ cells and somatic cells, that result in the initiation and progression of the various cancers. Within 10 years, the treatment and prevention of at least one of the major common cancers should be within reach.

New antitumor substance, designated BE-18591, was isolated from the culture broth of a streptomycete, strain BA18591. The active principle was extracted from mycelium by methanol and purified by silica gel chromatography. BE-18591 inhibited the growth of MKN-45 human stomach cancer cell line as well as P388 cell line. In in vivo experiments, BE-18591 inhibited the growth of Ehrlich ascites tumor.BE-18591 showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria.

The author surveys the way leading to the electronic theory of cancer and analyses the role of methylglyoxal and glyoxalases. Based on the comparison of experimental data with the theory it can be concluded that (i) data being at disposal are not convincing enough either to verify or to confute the theory; (ii) compounds having function to influence the glyoxalase system can, however, be considered as tumour-selective anticancer agents.

PUBDATE: 19921001
Pseudodiploid karyotypes with clonal structural rearrangements were observed in short-term cultures from two adenosquamous carcinomas (ASC) of the lung, a tumor type hitherto virtually uncharacterized cytogenetically. The karyotypes were 46,XX,der(1)t(1;14)(q44;q22),add(9)(q34) in the first tumor and 46,XX,i(17)(q10) in the second tumor. We suggest that ASC of the lung differ from other lung cancers by having pseudodiploid instead of massively aneuploid tumor stemlines.

PUBDATE: 19930901
Tremendous advances have been made in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of steroid hormone action. The cloning of the genes that encode classic steroid hormone receptors revealed that these receptors are but part of a large family of ligand-responsive transcriptional regulators. This fundamental advance has already contributed greatly to our understanding of a variety of diseases, particularly cancer, and the total dividend has not yet been realized. Steroid receptors have been and will be a fruitful area of research for many years.

An advanced gastric cancer with liver metastasis was treated with the combination MMC, Etoposide and UFT. Etoposide was administered orally at 25-50 mg/day to the gastric cancer patient with liver metastasis. In operative findings, there was no liver and lymphoid node metastasis. The gastric tumor diminished in size and changed its characteristics due to the chemotherapy. In 19 months, no liver nor LN metastasis was observed by CT scan. Presently, the patient feels well and receives outpatient treatment.
