A freeze dried kit formulation for the preparation of 99mTc-labelled IOR-CEA1, a monoclonal antibody (MoAb) against a human colorectal cancer, was developed. Methods of analysis were also established permitting identification of radiochemical impurities which may be present in radiopharmaceutical solution. 99mTc-EHDP-MoAb-IOR CEA1 prepared by the kit method was evaluated in human volunteers to apply the radioimmunodetection of human colon cancer. Data demonstrated that the complex formed after kit-reconstitution shows excellent stability and tumor seeking properties. Colon carcinoma in patients was successfully detected 6-8 and 20-28 h post administration.

Titanium implants in facial bones for retention of epitheses or dental bridges were used for reconstruction in cancer patients after tumor surgery. Even heavily irradiated bones could integrate the implants and bear the load from the epithesis. No major complications, such as wound infection, fistulation, or osteoradionecrosis, occurred after implant surgery. There was, however, an increased loss of implants with time after irradiation, especially in the orbital region. When hyperbaric oxygen was used as adjunctive treatment, implant losses were reduced.

The inflammatory sensory polyganglionopathies are a group of uncommon neurologic disorders primarily affecting dorsal root ganglion cells and their processes. Subdivided into malignant and nonmalignant inflammatory sensory polyganglionopathy, these conditions are important in the differential diagnosis of sensory neuropathy. The clinical significance of malignant inflammatory sensory polyganglionopathy, a paraneoplastic syndrome, rests in the discovery of subclinical cancer, which may produce antineuronal nuclear antibodies directed against the dorsal root ganglion cell and other neurons resulting in characteristic neurologic deficits. Prompt recognition of these distinctive signs and symptoms may result in early diagnosis and improved patient survival and lead to a better understanding of immune-mediated neurologic disease.

The key to specific and non-toxic cancer therapy is likely to be identification and targeting of processes that are absolutely unique to the tumor. One such approach is to target cells expressing mutations in the oncoproteins that led to the development of the cancer, such as p53. In animal model systems, highly mutant p53-specific cytotoxic T cells can be induced, but it remains to be seen whether this can be translated into clinical practice, and what proportion of tumors will respond. In this review, the potential and problems of immunological targeting of mutant p53 in solid tumors are discussed.

These peaks were identified as FUTP, FUDP, FUDP-glucose, FUDP-glucuronate, FUDP-GlcNAc, and FUDP-GalNAc via enzymatic conversion and 19F- and 31P-NMR analysis. Distinct 19F chemical shifts were assigned for FUTP, FUDP, and the FUDP-sugars.

Partial mitral homograft was used in 22 patients with localized lesions contraindicating a conventional valve repair. The etiologies of valve disease were: calcified rheumatic stenosis (n=14) and acute bacterial endocarditis (n=8). One patient died three months after surgery from cancer. Another patient required reoperation for residual stenosis 14 months postoperatively. All other patients had an excellent functional result with 19 patients in sinus rhythm. In this series, partial homograft replacement of the mitral valve significantly extended the possibilities of reconstructive surgery.

Antiandrogens are combined with medical or surgical castration to achieve total androgen blockade in metastatic prostate cancer. Discontinuation of antiandrogens at disease progression has been associated with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decrease, symptom improvement, and occasionally objective tumor regression. Two cases of metastatic prostate cancer demonstrating decrease in PSA of 92% and 56% on discontinuation of nilutamide therapy are reported. Improvement in urinary symptoms, bone pain and, in one, disappearance of para-aortic lymphadenopathy paralleled the PSA decrease. The duration of the withdrawal response of 6 months was comparable to those reported with discontinuation of flutamide.

The concomitant occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple myeloma seems fortuitous, with a relative risk of approximately 2. The effect of treatments, including methotrexate, remains unproven to date.

Non-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining neoplasms are being increasingly recognized in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The incidence of Hodgkin's disease and seminoma has recently been reported to be increasing in these patients. This article describes the second case of breast cancer in an HIV-infected male patient. A total of 11 cases of coincident breast cancer and HIV infection have previously been reported. It may be prudent to consider breast cancer in the differential diagnosis of an axillary mass in an HIV-infected patient.

TITLE: Testicular cancer in father and son.

The occurrence of testicular tumors in closely related family members is rare. We report a case of testicular cancers in a father and son. The father had pure seminoma, and his son developed a mixed nonseminomatous germ cell tumor. The peripheral blood lymphocytes in both patients were tested for 52 HLA specificities, and the patients were found to have six in common. The son was homozygous for HLA A24. The association between certain HLA antigens, other genetic factors, and testicular cancer requires further study to improve the care and counseling of patients and their families.

In pleural effusions, histologically proven to be malignant in 13 patients with small cell lung cancer, the immunocytological profile of tumour cells, together with the distribution of the lymphocyte subpopulations, were established. In all cases, tumor cells were demonstrable with the monoclonal antibodies EMA, HEA-125, Sam 2, 6, 8 and 10. In contrast, conventional cytology was positive in only 6 of the 13 cases. As in other malignant or inflammatory effusions, phenotyping of the lymphocytes revealed an elevated T4/T8 ratio in comparison with the normal value for peripheral blood.

Two patients with epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica recessiva who had squamous cell carcinoma are presented. Case 1 is a 40-year-old woman who had ulcers on her left lower leg. Case 2 is a 42-year-old man who had a tumor on his left first toe. Wide surgical excision with skin coverage by autograft was performed in case 1. Amputation of the toe in case 2 was performed. A review of the cases of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica associated with cancer reported in Japan is also presented.

Familial breast cancers represent about 10% of all cases of breast cancers. A predisposition locus has been located in the 17q21 chromosomal region. Nineteen French breast and breast-ovarian cancer families were tested for linkage with five highly polymorphic 17q markers. The five breast-ovarian cancer families as a group give positive evidence for linkage, whereas the 14 breast cancer families do not. Heterogeneity of linkage of familial breast cancer is significant in France and supports the existence of more than one susceptibility gene.
