TITLE: Neutropenic enterocolitis. A new complication of head and neck cancer chemotherapy.
PUBDATE: 19900201
Neutropenic enterocolitis is a recognized complication of immunosuppression or chemotherapy for leukemia. It presents as severe abdominal pain and tenderness, fever, and diarrhea associated with granulocytopenia. Gastrointestinal symptoms associated with chemotherapy for head and neck neoplasms include nausea and emesis, but not acute abdominal distress. We present, to our knowledge, the first case of neutropenic enterocolitis in a patient receiving cisplatin and fluorouracil chemotherapy for metastatic head and neck cancer.

TITLE: Quality assurance. How to audit your own mammography practice.
PUBDATE: 19920101
The medical audit is an important component of a comprehensive mammography quality assurance program. It provides a direct assessment of one's ability to detect otherwise occult breast cancer, the ultimate indicator of mammography performance. Audits must be properly planned, executed, interpreted, and used. The audit that shows successful clinical results can be used to build and maintain a high state of morale among mammography personnel as well as to encourage new and repeat referrals to a mammography practice. The audit that uncovers a deficiency in clinical performance can be instrumental in helping to plan remedial measures that correct the problem.

TITLE: The validity of inferences based on incomplete observations in disease state models.
PUBDATE: 19910601
In many survival time studies or studies on the progression of a disease, information is often incomplete in the sense that it is known only that a patient has been in certain disease states at several time points. In this paper, conditions concerning the interrelationship between the disease process and the examination scheme (i.e., the pattern of examination times) are derived under which a valid statistical inference is possible. These conditions are confronted with examination schemes that are of practical importance in clinical research. A cancer marker study is used as an example to estimate the magnitude of the potential bias when the conditions derived are violated.

PUBDATE: 19901201
Based on the mode of action of AFB1 and the activities of its biologically active intermediates, one may conclude that: 1. The mode of toxic action of the bisfuranoid mycotoxin is through epoxidation of the vinyl ether double bond of their dihydrobisfuran functionality. 2. The DNA and plasma albumin adducts formed in vivo may be useful in the molecular dosimetry of these environmental carcinogens. 3. Monitoring of these adducts of AFB1 in biological samples so far indicates that aflatoxin is likely involved in the etiology of human liver cancer.

PUBDATE: 19920701
A monoclonal antibody (mAb) A12 against gastric cancer was prepared in immuno-reconstituted nude mice from human ductal adenocarcinoma of stomach, Sy86B. mAb A12 could react with the majority of gastric cancer tissues (24/27-88.9%) but only cross react with a few normal tissues tested. The corresponding antigen of mAb A12 (antigen A12) was expressed at higher levels and usually in more than 50% of the cancer cells. mAb A12 may be a valid preparation in targeting therapy of gastric cancer. Preliminary analysis of antigen A12 showed that it is a oncofetal antigen probably of glycolipid or glycoprotein in nature.

TITLE: [Eccentric esophagogastrostomy for cancers of gastric cardia and fundus--a report of 122 cases]
PUBDATE: 19930301
Eccentric esophagogastrostomy was performed in 122 patients with cancers of gastric cardia and fundus from 1989 to 1991. Three patients (2.4%) had anastomotic stricture. There were no postoperative anastomotic leakage, gastroesophageal reflux and postoperative death. Since the procedure is performed on an opened stomach under direct vision, the operator can adjust the length of anastomosis. Postoperative X-ray imaging showed that the anastomotic form resembles the anatomical features of gastric cardia and fundus with a larger diameter than that made by routine operation. Therefore, the eccentric esophagogastrostomy may help to reduce the possibility of postoperative anastomotic stricture, prevent gastroesophageal reflux and anastomotic leakage.

PUBDATE: 19930601
Three cases with scar cancer of the lung were presented. One was explored and found unresectable and the other two had pneumonectomy. No long time survival was found after operation. These facts depicted that the tumor is higher malignant because of early lymphatic and hematogenous metastasis. The prognosis is poor. One case of them was given preoperative radiotherapy was carried our in one case and there was no obvious response. The clinicopathologic characteristics of the disease, the diagnostic standards and the relationship between the scar and cancer were discussed with a review of literature.

The management of cholelithiasis is usually straightforward, but there are a few special situations and questions which arise repeatedly. This paper deals with management of patients with asymptomatic stones, diabetic patients with stones, the relationships between stones and cancer, and patients without stones but who have typical pain. It also considers certain surgical topics of interest to primary care specialists, including that of safety of laparoscopic surgery, pain after surgery, and the role of incidental cholecystectomy.

TITLE: Recommendations regarding estrogen replacement therapy after treatment of endometrial cancer.
PUBDATE: 19920701
A history of endometrial cancer has long been considered a contraindication to estrogen replacement therapy. Yet women with such a history, like other women when postmenopausal, often suffer vasomotor symptoms that could easily be relieved with estrogen. In fact there is no good evidence that estrogen significantly increases the risk of recurrence after treatment for endometrial cancer. Some studies now suggest that estrogen plus a progestin may actually decrease the risk of cancer recurrence in these patients. The benefits of estrogen in preventing osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women is substantial.

TITLE: Rationale for the utilization of interleukin-4, an immune-recognition induced cytokine, in cancer immunotherapy.
PUBDATE: 19930101
Interleukin-2 use for advanced cancer treatment has demonstrated that cytokines are of interest not only in the field of immunology but also in oncology. Interleukin-2 is only one member of the ever-growing family of immune recognition-induced lymphokines. Interleukin-4, a cytokine with pleiotropic effects, shares some common properties with interleukin-2. Availability of recombinant interleukin-4 has led to a better knowledge of this cytokine's functions, and also makes clinical trials possible. This brief review discusses the in vitro and in vivo data that support a potential use of interleukin-4 in cancer immunotherapy.

TITLE: How adolescents compare AIDS with other diseases: implications for prevention.
PUBDATE: 19900201
Four hundred ten adolescents, ages 14-16 years, completed a questionnaire concerned with their understanding of the social and emotional consequences of AIDS and 5 other illnesses (lung cancer, German measles, chicken pox, asthma, and diabetes). Pupils distinguished between the diseases on all measured items, but younger pupils were more likely to believe that individuals were personally responsible for the onset of AIDS, lung cancer, and diabetes. The data are discussed in terms of the implications for health education campaigns.

TITLE: Percutaneous urinary diversion in patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer.
PUBDATE: 19910201
Twenty-two patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer underwent percutaneous urinary diversion; at the time, all but one had metastatic disease. Eleven patients received postnephrostomy therapy. The median survival time for all the patients was one hundred nineteen days. Overall, 41 percent of the patients' remaining lifetime was spent in the hospital. Six never left the hospital and 10 required rehospitalization; the remaining 6 patients were never rehospitalized. The median survival time for this group of patients was shorter than the expected survival of similar patients without ureteral obstruction. It appears that percutaneous urinary diversion does not improve the quality of life of these patients.

TITLE: Late effects of treatment in children with cancer.
PUBDATE: 19930201
For most children, cancer has become a curable disease. With this increased survival, the late effects of the diagnosis of cancer and its therapy have assumed increased importance for these children. Multiple late effects of essentially all organ systems have been described in selected groups of survivors. These may be modified by patient characteristics as well as therapy. Continued definition of these late sequelae are of critical importance to both the survivor of childhood cancer as well as the physicians planning future therapies.

PUBDATE: 19930701
pS2 expression was studied in a series of 82 primary breast carcinomas using and comparing a radioimmunoassay (RIA) technique and immunohistochemistry (IPOX). There was close correlation of the results obtained with each technique. Accurate and reliable determination of pS2 status in breast cancer can be made on the basis of immunohistochemistry using formalin fixed paraffin embedded sections. Immunohistochemical determination of pS2 status may be used in situations where the RIA technique cannot be applied, i.e. instances when fresh tumor tissue is not available.
