TITLE: [The attempt to standardize treatment protocols for cancer-related hypercalcemia: developing a data-based flowchart]
PUBDATE: 20031201
We developed a flowchart for the treatment of cancer-related hypercalcemia based on the review of previous reports. The treatment protocols were standardized in each group of four different ranges of serum calcium concentration (< 12, 12-14, 14-16, < 16 mg/dl). In each Ca range, specific treatment was adjusted according to the clinical evaluation of symptoms and progression of illness of the patients.

TITLE: Adsorption of nitrosamines in acidic solution by zeolites.
PUBDATE: 20050101
Adsorption of N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR) by zeolite NaZSM-5, Hbeta and NaZSM-11 in acidic solution with pH of 1 was investigated. The NPYR uptake process obeyed the first-rate Lagegren kinetic equation describing adsorption, and the equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir or Freundlich adsorption equation. Zeolite ZSM-5, Hbeta and NaZSM-11 possessed a higher adsorption capacity than amorphous silica or ordered mesoporous siliceous SBA-15, implying their potential application for adsorption of nitrosamines in gastric juice to anti-cancer.

TITLE: [Prognostic factors in prostate cancer]
PUBDATE: 20051101
Since several therapeutic options are currently available for clinically organ-confined prostate cancer, morphological parameters have rapidly emerged as prognostic factors to stratify patients into different therapeutic modalities. In addition to the PSA value, pathologic stage, as defined by the TNM system, Gleason grade and the surgical margin status, other markers have prognostic implications. This includes the percent pattern 4/5 cancer, tumor volume, intraductal spread, large volume perineural invasion and molecular markers. This review discusses the methods of sampling and reporting in prostate pathology with an emphasis on well established and new prognostic factors.

PUBDATE: 20050201
Workplace exposures to carcinogens long have been associated with cancers, and corrective measures to limit exposures have resulted in reductions in such cancers and improved worker health. Some exposures are currently of historical interest, and many current or past exposures are associated with conflicting evidence as to causality. We present a brief overview of the effects of exposure to asbestos, tobacco, and other known carcinogens.

TITLE: [Recommended soy and soy products intake to prevent bone fracture and osteoporosis]
PUBDATE: 20050801
Soy contains isoflavones, which are phytoestrogens, and its intake may help to prevent some diseases including menopausal disorder, osteoporosis, and breast cancer. Natto, a fermented soy product, is rich in vitamin K, which also contributes to bone health. In this report, we overviewed peer-reviewed papers showing relationship between soy product intake and risks of bone fracture and osteoporosis. It is suggested that that intake of soy products is not strongly enough to conclude but possible to be efficient in prevention of bone fracture and osteoporosis.

TITLE: [Drug therapy of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer]
PUBDATE: 20051101
In less than a decade, metastatic cancer in the colon or rectum has changed from being primarily a surgically palliated disease to one in which there have been increasing successes with combination chemotherapy and molecular targeted therapy. Without treatment, only half of the patients are alive after six months, and there are almost no survivors after two years. With modern therapy, about half of the patients are now alive after two years and the survival time continues to increase. Instead of being a more or less acute life-threatening disease, metastatic colorectal cancer may exist as a chronic condition for years.

PUBDATE: 20030301
We report a patient who developed Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) after treatment with antithymocyte globulin and cyclosporine for aplastic anemia. The clinical course was progressive and poor prognosis. Although MCC is relatively rare in second cancers arising after immunosuppressive therapy, patients should be closely monitored for the development of this complication as well as other second malignancies.

In France, American pulmonary histoplasmosis is an imported deep mycosis, caused by inhalation of Histoplasma capsulatum. Clinical and radiological features of this exotic disease are multiple, simulating tuberculosis or cancer. We report two cases of American histoplasmosis with pseudo-tumoral form, in immunocompetent subjects working in Venezuela, with a multinodular pulmonary presentation.

TITLE: [Lung cancer]
PUBDATE: 20041001
Tumor markers are defined as substances which are produced by cancer cells or non-cancer cells reactive to cancer cells, and reflect the cancer status, such as its presence, characteristics, and volume. Clinically, many tumor markers are useful not only to assess the presence/absence of cancer, the primary site, histology, stage, and recurrence, but also to monitor the anti-cancer therapy. Tumor markers for lung cancer play only supporting roles because of their limited sensitivity and specificity, but they are clinically essential to daily medical oncology. This review addresses 6 important tumor markers for lung cancer, namely, CEA, SLX, CYFRA, SCC, ProGRP, and NSE.

PUBDATE: 20021001
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. One of the important reasons why conventional treatments fail is the development of resistance to therapeutics. The dual effect concept and self-defense mechanism plus the threshold theory might in part explain the development of resistance, however, the primary cause is unclear. A novel theory, 'cell brain', where, selective crystallization of the 'brain' of a cell (comprising centrosome, centrioles and the connecting filaments) occurs, may be a potential alternate approach to cancer therapy.

In patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer, accurate assessment of tumour extent within and beyond the gut wall and detection of lymph node and distant metastases are of paramount importance in planning the surgical approach, in deciding whether neo-adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation therapy is necessary, and in determining the risk of tumour recurrence and overall prognosis. The utility of MDCT, MR, endoscopic ultrasound, PET, PET/CT is discussed and recommendations for cost-effective imaging in these patients are presented.

TITLE: The role of disturbed pH dynamics and the Na+/H+ exchanger in metastasis.
PUBDATE: 20051001
Recent research has highlighted the fundamental role of the tumour's extracellular metabolic microenvironment in malignant invasion. This microenvironment is acidified primarily by the tumour-cell Na(+)/H(+) exchanger NHE1 and the H(+)/lactate cotransporter, which are activated in cancer cells. NHE1 also regulates formation of invadopodia - cell structures that mediate tumour cell migration and invasion. How do these alterations of the metabolic microenvironment and cell invasiveness contribute to tumour formation and progression?

This article reviews the most recent technology used in the treatment of head and neck cancer. It discusses brachytherapy, new ways to mix radionuclides for enhanced radiobiologic effects, and different fractionation schemes that have grown in clinical importance. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy has become a mainstay in head and neck cancer treatment, and the authors discuss several popular and emerging approaches. Patient immobilization and imaging are also discussed.

TITLE: Mechanistic approaches to chemoprevention of mutation and cancer.
PUBDATE: 20051201
This is the eighth special issue of 'Mutation Research' to focus on antimutagenesis and anticarcinogenesis. It covers a wide range of mechanisms from prevention of cancer initiation by antimutagens through to inhibition of tumour angiogenesis and selective estrogen receptor modulators. New screening methods and new biomarkers are also elucidated. There is increasing reason to believe that the long-term use of a combination of anticarcinogens, over an extended time span, may provide a realistic prospect of reducing the current burden of human cancers.
