PUBDATE: 19920201
Premalignant lesions of the penis include cutaneous horn, balanitis xerotica obliterans, and leukoplakia. The true incidence of progression of each of these to squamous-cell carcinoma is unknown. Bowenoid papulosis, erythroplasia of Queyrat, and Bowen's disease are histologically identical to in situ carcinoma. Although the first is consistently benign, the latter two regularly evolve into invasive cancer. Malignant scrotal lesions include squamous-cell carcinoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, basal-cell carcinoma, extramammary Paget's disease, erythroplasia of Queyrat, malignant melanoma, and metastases. Hemangioma can be confused with carcinoma.

TITLE: Reduced occurrence of mdr-1 amplification in stage-IV breast-cancer patients treated with tamoxifen compared with other endocrine treatments.
PUBDATE: 19930201
Amplification of mdr-1 occurs in breast cancer patients receiving endocrine treatment. We have compared a group of patients receiving tamoxifen and a group receiving second-line endocrine treatment after failure of tamoxifen treatment. Chronological tumor samples were obtained by fine-needle biopsies from the same tumor lesion of each patient and PCR was used to detect the appearance of gene amplification. Three of 20 patients receiving tamoxifen developed amplified mdr-1 whereas 7 of 17 patients receiving second-line endocrine treatment developed mdr-1 amplification.

PUBDATE: 19960801
A 54-year-old Japanese man with cutaneous malignant fibrous histiocytoma on the back is reported. He not only had a past history of thyroid cancer 1 year prior to the onset of the skin tumor, but also had simultaneous bladder cancer. Despite the early, wide resection, the prognosis was rapid and progressive. Histologically, the primary lesion of the skin tumor was difficult to differentiate from dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans; however, the recurrent and the metastatic lesions changed in appearance.

PUBDATE: 19910201
The underlying premise of tumor immunology is that the immune system is capable of recognizing cancer cells and that immune recognition can lead to rejection of tumors by the host. We focus on recent advances in tumor immunology in experimental systems, including the molecular identification of tumor antigens, studies of recognition of tumor cells by the immune system, and the development of new strategies for treatment of cancer. Identifying potential target antigens on tumors and defining effector arms of the immune system that mediate tumor rejection (including T cells, natural killer cells, antibodies, complement cells, and cytokines) remain crucial problems for the field.

TITLE: [Structure and function of P-glycoprotein in antitumor agent resistance; implication for clinical setting]
PUBDATE: 19951001
Resistance of tumors to a variety of chemotherapeutic agents presents a major problem in cancer treatment. The gene responsible for multidrug resistance, termed mdr1, encodes a membrane glycoprotein (P-glycoprotein) that acts as a pump to transport various cytotoxic agents. The P-glycoprotein has been shown to bind anticancer drugs and several resistance-reversing agents including calcium channel blockers, and to be an ATPase. The P-glycoprotein was found to function in blood-brain barrier. The implication of the P-glycoprotein in relation to therapy is discussed.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma has been reported to have a higher incidence of distant metastases as compared to other head and neck cancers. Distant metastases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma has been reported in the bones, lungs, liver, distant lymph nodes, brain and porta hepatis. This report presents a case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with secondaries in the extradural space at the thoracic level of the spinal cord which hitherto has been an unreported site.

Thirty-five evaluable patients with advanced adenocarcinoma of the pancreas were treated with piroxantrone at a dose of 150 mg/m2 intravenously every 21 days. No objective responses were observed (95% confidence interval 0%-10%). Toxicities of grade > or = 3 were primarily hematologic and were seen in 28 patients. Piroxantrone is inactive in pancreatic cancer and no further investigation of this agent in this tumor is recommended.

Advances in classification, imaging, diagnosis, surgical issues, and treatment issues shown in case series and individual case reports are presented and discussed.

All complications were registered in 139 consecutive second-look operations for ovarian cancer. Forty-one complications were registered in 33 patients, none lethal. The most frequent complications were anaemia requiring blood-transfusion (10.7%) and acute cystitis (4.3%). Other complications were seen with frequencies between 0.7 to 2.8 percent. No differences with respect to complications were found between patients with residual tumour versus those without, nor between patients where only biopsies were taken versus those who had organs removed. Although the patients were in clinical complete remission, 53% were found to have residual disease at second-look operation.

PUBDATE: 19930401
On January 1, 1993, the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) surveillance case definition for adolescents and adults was expanded beyond the surveillance definition published in 1987 (1) to include all human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons with severe immunosuppression (< 200 CD4+ T-lymphocytes/microL or a CD4+ T-lymphocyte percentage of total lymphocytes of < 14), pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), recurrent pneumonia, or invasive cervical cancer. This report reviews AIDS surveillance reports CDC received from local, state, and territorial health departments during the first quarter of 1993 and summarizes the impact of the changes in the AIDS surveillance case definition.

PUBDATE: 19910101
Medullary thyroid cancers have different morphological, endocrine and biological qualities than all the other tumors of the thyroid. Therapy is the thyroidectomy with modified, radical neck dissection. The ten year survival rate was 65% in our own patient material. The prognosis depended on tumor size, invasion of vessels by the tumor, grade of differentiation, tumor stage, metastasis and radicality of the operation.
