TITLE: [SEM study of invasive characteristics of colorectal cancer]
PUBDATE: 19900601
This paper reports the results of a study on the invasive characteristics of 22 colorectal cancer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that adenocarcinoma cells stretching polymorphic pseudopodia penetrated into peripheral tissue and adhered to or invaded the vessels, but most of the mucoid carcinoma cells migrated separately into the tissue clefts and invaded the vessels. The invasive mode had dominant differentiation in two typical cancer. The author believes that colorectal cancer possesses two invasive factors: ameboid movement and destroying tissues by lysozyme.

PUBDATE: 19900701
This paper generalizes the index for temporal clustering proposed by Tango in two ways: it allows for nonuniform population distributions across the study period and it is applicable to the detection of disease clustering in space where there are variations in population distribution among categories of the confounding factor such as age and sex. Applications are illustrated with 1833 cases of mortality from uterine cancer in the Tokyo metropolitan area during 1978-1982.

TITLE: Stem cell regulation, tissue ontogeny, and oncogenic events.
PUBDATE: 19920601
The number of necessary oncogenic events is a function of tissue ontogeny. A minimum of two events appears to suffice for certain embryonal tumors, leukemias, and lymphomas for which the target tissues normally show stem cell proliferation. Other tumors, including those featured in the Li-Fraumeni syndrome, arise in target tissues whose stem cells are conditionally stimulated to proliferate, as in response to hormones, and involve more events. The most complex cancers include most carcinomas, which arise in renewal tissues whose stem cells do not normally proliferate. The number of necessary oncogenic events appears to increase with the number of controls on proliferation.

TITLE: [A case of peritonitis carcinomatosa due to advanced gastric cancer effectively treated by intraperitoneal injection of carboplatin]
PUBDATE: 19910801
The patient was a 72-year-old woman who had advanced carcinoma of the stomach. She presented massive ascites due to peritonitis carcinomatosa. The cytology of ascites was class V and the CEA level of ascites was elevated. Since renal function was low, we injected 300 mg of carboplatin intraperitoneally 2 times in 8 weeks. The amount of ascites was significantly diminished and the CEA level of ascites was decreased. The result suggested the effectiveness of intraperitoneal injection of carboplatin for the therapy of peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer.

PUBDATE: 19931101
Leiomyosarcoma of the stomach is an unfrequent tumor, for which the prognosis is better than for cancer of the stomach. Its development is often subserosal, thus explaining its clinical latency and its large volume at the time of diagnosis. While many publications report about the merits of conventional imaging for this type of pathology, few authors have considered ultrasonographic endoscopy, and even fewer magnetic resonance imaging. The authors present one case for which these two recent techniques were implemented, as well as a review of the literature.

PUBDATE: 19910301
R.A. Fisher's work on lung cancer and smoking is critically reviewed. The controversy is placed in the context of his career and personality. Although Fisher made invaluable contributions to the field of statistics, his analysis of the causal association between lung cancer and smoking was flawed by an unwillingness to examine the entire body of data available and prematurely drawn conclusions. His views may also have been influenced by personal and professional conflicts, by his work as a consultant to the tobacco industry, and by the fact that he was himself a smoker.

PUBDATE: 19900601
Fifty patients with advanced gastric cancer underwent chemotherapy in accordance with the FAMTX protocol. Complete tumor remission was achieved in 6 patients and partial remission in 11 patients. In this group 9 patients (tumor stage: T3-4, N2-3, M chi-1) underwent a second-look operation after chemotherapy either to confirm the complete remission or to resect the remaining tumor mass. It is concluded that even in advanced stages of gastric carcinomas a more aggressive approach involving a combination of surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment improves the survival time of these patients.

PUBDATE: 19930501
This report presents a case of aortic valvular dysfunction and right coronary artery disease following radiation therapy on the mediastinum. A 61-year-old woman had received mediastinal radiation for the treatment of right mammary cancer 20 years previously. She developed symptoms of congestive heart failure 6 months ago. The patient was found to have aortic valvular dysfunction and proximal stenosis of the right coronary artery. Surgical aortic valve replacement improved cardiac status, and vasodilator treatment reduced ischemia due to right coronary artery stenosis.

TITLE: [Correlation of proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells with both saturation index and cell membrane insulin receptors]
PUBDATE: 19921201
Exogenous epidermal growth factor (or somatostatin) can stimulate (or inhibit) proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells, with a corresponding decrease (or increase) of the saturation index of the cell membrane and up-regulation (or down-regulation) of insulin receptor expression. By measuring the saturation index and insulin receptor numbers on the cell membrane it may be possible to evaluate the curative effects of treatment on pancreatic cancer at an early time.

PUBDATE: 19930401
The progressive process of tumor invasion and generation of metastases is the primary cause of death for most patients with cancer. Recent advances have led to identification of novel sites for investigation and intervention. These advances include the definition of regulatory components of the metastatic cascade and characterization of the processes of angiogenesis, adhesion, proteolysis, and migration. This further understanding of the complex process of cancer progression has allowed the development of new diagnostic tools and potential therapeutic approaches.

PUBDATE: 19930901
This article provides an overview of the classification of thyroid carcinoma into well-differentiated forms (papillary and follicular) as well as the rare Hurthle cell, medullary, and anaplastic forms. The characteristics, relative frequency, and mortality rates of each form of thyroid cancer are summarized. The roles of history, physical examination, blood tests, such as thyroid function test, thyroglobulin (htg), calcitonin and CEA, radionuclide and ultrasound imaging, and fine-needle aspirates are outlined for the diagnosis and management of thyroid cancer. An algorithmic diagram of the monitoring procedures for long-term management of various forms of thyroid cancer is presented.

PUBDATE: 19931201
The present investigational goal of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy for liver metastasis from colorectal cancer is to re-evaluate the impact of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy on survival by a comparative study combined with systemic chemotherapy. As an approach to this goal, technical standardization, development of an effective regimen without pumps and an improved system of cooperative study are being carried out. However, there are many problems to be solved in order to perform a randomized trial.

TITLE: The bcl-2 oncogene and apoptosis.
PUBDATE: 19921201
The bcl-2 oncogene is activated as a consequence of the t(14;18) chromosomal translocation in human follicular lymphomas. Bcl-2 functions to inhibit apoptosis in a variety of in vitro and in vivo experiments, suggesting interference with a central mechanism of apoptosis. The bcl-2 protein is associated with the inner mitochondrial membrane, however, the biochemical function of bcl-2 is unknown. Transgenic mice which overexpress bcl-2 provide evidence for bcl-2's role in memory B cells and thymic education as an intracellular survival factor. Additional regulators of apoptosis, such as the p53 tumor suppressor gene, may be altered in human cancers as one step in tumorigenesis.

TITLE: Chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced bladder carcinoma.
PUBDATE: 19920801
Bladder carcinoma represents the fifth leading cause of cancer in the United States. For patients with muscle-invasive tumors, radical cystectomy has been the treatment of choice, yet over 50% of such treated patients are destined to develop recurrent disease. In order to minimize morbidity in patients with invasive disease, bladder-sparing techniques using radiotherapy alone, or with chemotherapy, have been investigated. While it is clear that durable complete remission can be achieved in some patients, the results to date require additional follow-up to determine the optimal cohort of patients destined to benefit from this approach. It is hoped that ongoing prospective trials will delineate this population.
