TITLE: [Anal condyloma: its management is still difficult]
PUBDATE: 20011001
Anal condylomas result from papillomavirus infection, the most common sexually transmitted disease. The principal risk is the development of cancer of the anal canal. The risk of contamination is high, even after a single sexual contact. No specific antiviral treatment is available and no consensus has been reached on the appropriate treatment of anal condylomas. Despite the development of various methods (interferon, imiquimod), electrocoagulation remains the treatment of choice. Finally, regular follow-up and treatment of the partner(s) are essential.

TITLE: Mismatch repair defects in cancer.
PUBDATE: 20000401
Post-replicative mismatch repair in humans utilises the hMSH2, hMSH6, hMSH3, hMLH1 and hPMS2 genes and possibly the newly identified hMLH3 gene. Recently, a link has been established between hMSH6 mutations and 'atypical' hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC) with an increased incidence of endometrial cancers. To satisfy the need for a diagnostic test capable of differentiating between pathogenic mutations and polymorphisms, several functional assays that fulfil these criteria have been described. These should allow for better diagnosis of HNPCC.

PUBDATE: 20020701
Cancer treatment is one of the most important fields in medical research. All strategies such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery, and gene-based therapy have their own advantage and disadvantages. Nowadays, a novel method which combined traditional therapy with gene therapy plays an important role in the field of cancer research. This review described the current state of combined therapies of gene-based and radiate radiotherapy. Meanwhile, we evaluated the prospect of this combined treatment.

Aneuploidy has long been recognized to be a cardinal feature of many neoplasias. However, the role of aneuploidy in tumorigenesis continues to be a matter of debate. We believe that aneuploidy in cancers is the result of chromosomal instability, a process in which dividing cancer cells segregate their chromosomes with decreased fidelity. Here we discuss our definition of chromosomal instability, evidence for its causal role in tumor development, and suggestions regarding the mechanisms that initiate chromosomal instability in cancer cells.

Mutual adhesion of animal cells is intimately linked to Wnt signaling through a shared component: beta-catenin, or Armadillo in Drosophila. Recent work indicates how beta-catenin shifts from cell adhesion to Wnt signaling, a switch associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transitions and cancer.

The perspective of urologic oncology in the twenty-first century is presented regarding detection, treatment, and prevention of cancer. There is increasing importance of a cancer information network. Biotechnology and medical engineering based on advances in computer science will be the two key technologies related to such advancement. Ethical, legal, social, and economic issues provoked by the technologic advances will increase in gravity at the same time. Balancing humans in terms of scientific technologic developments and state of mind will be a serious issue.

A 21-year-old woman presented to the Charles C. Harris Skin and Cancer Pavilion with a life-long history of palmoplantar keratoderma that was accompanied by episodic flares of polycyclic psoriasiform patches diffusely over the rest of her body. A biopsy specimen of a representative skin lesion showed epidermolytic hyperkeratosis. The particular phenotype that this patient exhibited has been reported in only seven families previously in the literature. Mutations in keratin 1 and 10 have been identified in these patients and are similar to those mutations in patients with classic epidermolytic hyperkeratosis.

PUBDATE: 20050801
The purpose of operation in Barrett's esophagus is to protect against esophageal acid exposure. In Western countries antireflux surgery is positive because Barrett's esophagus is recognized as premalignancy. But in Japan many people have SSBE without intestinal metaplasia. Thus if cancer is not detected in Barrett's esophagus, it is difficult to accept surgery. Besides antireflux surgery is not always successful. So the extra-surgical treatment is more recommended than operation in Japan.

This time, in 3008 lung cancer patients, the postoperative results were analyzed under the new stage grouping of TNM classification. All of those patients underwent the operation in 1989, and the 5 year-survival rates had beeb surveyed in 1996 by JACS (The Japanese Association for Chest Surgery). Under the new TNM classification established in 1996 worldwidey, T3N0M0 was transferred from IIIA to IIB. This report is the additional one in the focus of the results accompanied with the change of TNM classification.

Insulin-like growth factors (IGF) are pleiotrophic polypeptides affecting all aspects of growth and development. The IGF system, including ligands, receptors, binding proteins and proteases is also involved in pathophysiological conditions, such as cancer and degenerative conditions. In this review, the actions and interactions of the IGF system as it relates to Alzheimer's disease will be investigated.

A 57-year-old woman presented with subacute sensory, ataxic neuronopathy. Clinical investigation revealed a right-sided non-small-cell lung cancer. Serum investigation for specific antineuronal antibodies was negative. Histology showed T lymphocytic infiltrates in dorsal root ganglia. The observed histological pattern is similar to that described in antibody-positive cases. Thus, these findings suggest similar pathways in specific antineuronal antibody-negative and -positive cases of paraneoplastic subacute sensory neuronopathy.
