TITLE: [Antimetastasis effect of lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells on fibrosarcoma in WKA rats]
PUBDATE: 19861101
Treating WKA rats with fibrosarcoma with LAK cells, antimetastasis effect was studied. The results indicated that splenocytes incubated by IL-2 could produce lytic activity to WKA rats with fibrosarcoma in vitro. Passive infusion of LAK cells lead to a marked reduction in the number of metastatic nodules in the lung. After intravenous injection of LAK cells, cancer cells in the lung speedily disappeared. LAK cell administration for 3 times gave better result than once only (P less than 0.01). In this paper, the possibility of LAK cells used as an adoptive immunotherapy for human neoplasms is briefly discussed.

TITLE: [Effect of preoperative radiation therapy on intravascular blood coagulation in the combined treatment of kidney cancer patients]
PUBDATE: 19830601
Hemostasis has been studied over time in 137 patients with renal cancer. Of these, 69 underwent surgery only, 68 received combined treatment with preoperative large fractionation radiotherapy. It has been established that renal cancer development in the body stimulates intravascular blood coagulation (IVBC). In the patients with renal cancer who were radiation treated, IVBC activation was more noticeable than in those who had surgery only. To prevent IVBC activation and the development of the DIVC-syndrome, it is proposed to prescribe deaggregates in the period of preoperative therapy and heparin in the postoperative period.

PUBDATE: 19850201
The authors have examined the survival rate of 111 patients with colorectal cancer (Dukes' A, B, and C stages) treated by potentially curative surgery. In particular, the survival has been evaluated with regard to the appearance of postoperative fever and/or septic complications. The preliminary results demonstrate that these factors do not significantly influence the long-term prognosis.

PUBDATE: 19890701
Scattered reports have suggested the association of cancer with bullous disease. We report herein, two surgical cases of lung cancer arising from bullae. Both the patients were males who smoked heavily and the generation of cancer was found simultaneously with the discovery of the bulla. At thoracotomy, it was found that the cancer had arisen from the firm, scarred and contracted area adjacent to the bulla wall. On the basis of this experience and review of the literature, it is suggested that physicians should always pay careful attention to the generation and complication of cancer while treating bullous disease in heavy smoking individuals.

TITLE: Receptors for epidermal growth factor and estradiol in canine mammary tumors.
PUBDATE: 19870801
Both growth factors and steroid hormones are known to be associated with breast cancer. We have studied the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in canine mammary tumors and have shown the presence of a single class of 125I-EGF binding receptor sites in 9 out of 13 (70%) tumors, using Scatchard plot. The dissociation constant (KD) was 10(-9)M. An inverse correlation between EGFR and estrogen receptor (ER) was observed in 54% of the tumors. Our data suggest that EGFR might be used as a biochemical marker in canine mammary tumors.

PUBDATE: 19881201
Twenty-three outpatients with cancer pain refractory to other methods of pain control were treated with epidural morphine (EM) delivered through a chronically placed percutaneous lumbar epidural catheter. Patients and their families were taught to administer EM at home. Mean EM doses ranged from 18 to 31 mg/day. Mean catheter lifespan was 6.3 weeks. There were no catheter-related infections or cases of respiratory depression. After 2500 patient treatment days, we have found this method to be a safe and effective method of cancer pain management in outpatients.

Sixty-one patients with cancer of the uterine cervix received pretreatment laparotomy before the radiotherapy. As an operative procedure, several hemostatic clips were put on the serosal surface of the uterine wall in order to visualize the uterine contour in the localization X-ray films. By this method, six patients among them were proved to have uterine perforation at the time of small source insertion.

PUBDATE: 19840201
The influence of mechlorethamine (HN2, nitrogen mustard) on UV-induced carcinogenesis was examined in the hairless mouse skin in vivo. Noncarcinogenic amounts of topically applied HN2 and carcinogenic levels of UVB energy were used in the study. The HN2 applications significantly accelerated the appearance and growth of cutaneous tumors in this study. Thus HN2 acted as either a promoter or cocarcinogen for UV-induced cancer formation. Although the mechanism of this effect was not established, combinations of UVB radiation and HN2 topical therapy pointed to an increased incidence of cutaneous tumors in human skin.

TITLE: Protective role of faecal pH in experimental colon carcinogenesis.
PUBDATE: 19850301
There is epidemiological evidence that populations with alkaline stool pH are at greater risk for colon cancer than populations with acid stool pH. This association was investigated in the laboratory using the rat-dimethylhydrazine colon carcinogenesis model. Rats with acid stool pH, produced by consumption of lactulose or sodium sulphate or both, had significantly fewer colon tumours after injections of dimethylhydrazine (DMH) than rats treated with DMH alone. The results confirm the hypothesis that acidification of the stool can protect against the induction of colon cancer.

Testicular cancer is the most frequent malignancy in young adult males. Seminoma, the most frequent cell type, causes exophthalmos on a hormonal basis; actual tumor invasion of the orbit has been reported once. We report here a second case of orbital invasion by seminoma. When tumor has spread beyond the retroperitoneum, treatment with chemotherapy is usually recommended. A biopsy of the orbital metastatic tumor may be the technique with least morbidity to document tumor state prior to committing the patient to systemic chemotherapy.

PUBDATE: 19881101
Tuberculosis may simulate cancer. We report on twelve cases with the clinical diagnosis of cancer in which autopsy revealed tuberculosis. Weight loss and fever were the most common symptoms. Chest x-ray abnormalities were seen in 50% of cases. A debilitating disease other than tuberculosis was present in 6 cases. Miliary disseminated tuberculosis was the most common form encountered at autopsy. Physicians should be aware that the clinical findings of tuberculosis may suggest malignancy.

TITLE: Histological diagnosis of scirrhous carcinoma of the stomach using monoclonal antibody S202.
PUBDATE: 19880201
It is sometimes difficult to identify scirrhous carcinoma cells microscopically, since individually separated malignant cells grow into the fibrous tissue without glandular formation. In this study, we used anti-scirrhous carcinoma monoclonal antibody S202, which reacted strongly with 100% of scirrhous gastric cancer samples, in order to evaluate the precise depth to which cancer cells invaded in the stomach wall. The invasive carcinoma cells could be detected more clearly by immunohistochemical staining with S202 than by histological staining with hematoxylin-eosin. Furthermore, S202 was more useful than anti-CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) antibody.

TITLE: Failure of subcutaneous mastectomy to prevent the development of breast cancer.
PUBDATE: 19840701
Three patients treated with bilateral subcutaneous mastectomies and implants for fibrocystic disease or carcinoma in situ subsequently developed invasive breast carcinoma. These cases emphasize that subcutaneous mastectomy does not prevent the development of breast cancer. If the circumstances in an individual patient justify prophylactic mastectomy, then the appropriate procedure would seem to be total mastectomy, which would accomplish thorough removal of all breast tissue, the subareolar region, and the nipple. Subcutaneous mastectomy for the patient who is likely to harbor occult invasive disease seems particularly inappropriate. As a means to reduce the risk of breast cancer, the procedure is unproved and must be considered an experimental therapeutic approach.

Methodological principles of contact and gamma-beam irradiation of patients with endometrial cancer in combined and concomitant radiotherapy were described. Variants of multipositional gamma-therapy using serial Agat B and Agat B 3 units with volumetric dose distributions determined by calculations, are used for contact radiotherapy. For concomitant radiotherapy methods of automated gamma-beam therapy of Rokus units with the Altai-MT system and static irradiation with braking radiation of 25 MeV betatron using irregular fields were proposed. All the methods are based upon the clinical testing of the Soviet radiotherapeutic equipment.

TITLE: [Morphological and immunocytochemical studies of pancreatic multiple endocrine neoplasia type-1]
PUBDATE: 19840801
Morphological and immunocytochemical studies of pancreatic material from a patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia type-1 revealed hyperplasia of islets, multiple microadenomas, adenomas and cancers. Cellular composition of the hyperplastic islets was almost normal but the enlargement of the size and increase of the numbers were observed. Furthermore, neoformation of islets from ducts were found here and there. These hyperplastic islets, microadenomas, adenomas and cancers merged into each other and some of these microadenomas demonstrated malignant pictures. Most of the microadenomas produced multiple peptide hormones, on the other hand some of these revealed a single hormonal activity. These results show that the abnormality of the primordial cells of the pancreatic endocrine cells develops these lesion.
