TITLE: Linkage analysis of 19 French breast cancer families, with five chromosome 17q markers.
PUBDATE: 19930401
Nineteen French breast and breast-ovarian cancer families were tested for linkage with five chromosome 17q markers. The five breast-ovarian cancer families as a group give positive evidence for linkage, whereas the 14 breast cancer-only families do not. Heterogeneity of linkage of breast and breast-ovarian cancers is significant in France and supports the existence of more than one susceptibility gene.

TITLE: [Sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma: 3 case reports]
PUBDATE: 19920201
We report 3 cases of sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma, which is an uncommon neoplasm consisting of a typical renal cell carcinoma associated intimately with a sarcomatoid component. All patients were symptomatic at hospitalization and underwent nephrectomy. Two patients died of metastatic renal cancer within a year, and another is alive without evidence of metastasis for 12 months after the surgery. Because sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma has a highly malignant behavior and poor prognosis, an adjuvant treatment effective in controlling the disease is awaited.

TITLE: Screening for lung cancer in the middle-aged.
PUBDATE: 19900201
A screening programme for lung diseases has been in operation in the German Democratic Republic for more than 3 decades. The programme is based on biennial chest X-rays (70 x 70 mm posterior-anterior) of the population 40 years of age or over. With respect to lung cancer the results show that, for the population under 60 years of age, the adjusted relative risk of dying from lung cancer among subjects who took part in the last screening round compared with subjects who did not but were screened at least once during the preceding 10-year period was 0.93 (95% confidence interval 0.65-1.33).

PUBDATE: 19921201
Lung cancer infrequently metastasizes to the bowel. When this occurs, the symptoms may vary from mild to emergent in nature. Three patients are presented illustrating the life threatening complications that may occur due to bowel metastases of lung carcinoma. A review of the literature reveals that only four of 24 reported patients have survived bowel perforation due to metastatic lung carcinoma. One of the three patients presented herein survived to be discharged home. Patients with known lung carcinoma who develop abdominal complaints should be investigated aggressively to prevent life-threatening complications by early intervention.

PUBDATE: 19920801
A case of metastatic tumor of the penis from lung cancer is reported. The patient, who had received a right pneumonectomy 17 months previously for a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, complained of urinary retention and painful erection of the penis. He underwent an emergency suprapubic cystostomy. Twenty days after the procedure, he died of disseminated lung carcinoma. The autopsy demonstrated massive metastasis to the penis from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Penile metastasis from lung cancer is a very rare condition and only 14 cases of this secondary carcinoma have been reported.

PUBDATE: 19901101
Plasma estrone (E1), estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3) levels were determined in 51 cases of cervical cancer and 52 normal postmenopausal women. It was found that the plasma E1, E2 and E3 levels in cervical cancer patients were higher than those in normal postmenopausal women. There was a significant difference in E1 and E3 between the two groups (P less than 0.05). E1/E2, E2/E3, E1/E3 and E1/E2 + E3 were measured in the two groups. E1/E2 ratio in cervical cancer patients was higher than that in normal postmenopausal women (P less than 0.05).

PUBDATE: 19930501
Older women participate in cervical cancer screening less regularly than do younger women. As a consequence, more lesions are found in more advanced and less curable stages in older women. Elderly black and Hispanic women have had lower rates of participation in cervical cancer screening than white women. There is a marked, inverse relationship between the stage of cervical cancer at diagnosis and the 5-year survival rate. The rate of cervical cancer screening among older women can be increased by offering education about Pap tests and onsite cervical cancer screening in housing for the elderly.

TITLE: How cancer affects sexual functioning.
PUBDATE: 19900601
Significant sexual morbidity occurs in the majority of cancer patients. In the assessment of sexual functioning, the health-care provider needs to survey sexual behavior, sexual desire, excitement, orgasm, and resolution (i.e., the sexual response cycle), and the occurrence of sexual dysfunction(s). Data are available documenting sexual disruption for the major sites of disease, including breast, colorectal, bladder, and the genitals, as well as for those with Hodgkin's disease. The author includes a brief model (ALARM) to assist the health professional in assessing sexual functioning in cancer patients.

PUBDATE: 19920801
A study of 578 patients treated for colorectal cancer in the North-west region comparing survival after surgery in teaching and non-teaching hospitals was performed. All patients had a minimum of 5 years follow-up. A greater proportion of elderly and emergency patients were treated in the non-teaching hospitals. The number of operative mortalities and 5-year survival figures for all causes of death and for colorectal deaths alone were similar in teaching and non-teaching hospital patients.

TITLE: Isothiocyanates inhibit cell cycle progression of HeLa cells at G2/M phase.
PUBDATE: 19930401
To analyze the inhibitory effects of isothiocyanates on the growth of human cancer cells, the effects of these compounds on the cell cycle progression of HeLa cells were studied by flow cytometry. The accumulation of cells at G2/M phase was observed at 16 h after treatment with 10 microM allyl isothiocyanate, 2.5 microM benzyl or phenethyl isothiocyanate, at which concentrations the cell growth was inhibited to 41-79% of control. These results suggest that isothiocyanates delay the cell cycle progression of HeLa cells, leading to inhibition of cell growth.

Using mutational and anti-mutational synchronous in SOS inductest (+/- S9), We found that 7 out of 11 kinds of commonly eaten vegetables had the ability to inhibit mutagenicity caused by chemical drugs such as Mitomycin C, Bleomycinia, Fluorouracil, Cis-Diaminodichloroplatinum, Arabinosylcytosin and mustargen, They were garlic, green Chinese onion, onion, garlic bulb, tomato, cucumber and water radish. The other 4 lacking this ability were rape, chinese toon, ginger and asparagus lettuce stalk. We believe that our results can be helpful in the preparation. of cancer patients' diet, who are receiving chemotherapy and in the prevention of cancer.

The past decade has seen an intense focus on the evaluation of American women for the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. A concomitant increase in lawsuits filed for delay in diagnosis of breast cancer has occurred, creating consternation in the medical community. Efforts in responding to this public health challenge, comprised by fear of legal reprisal, may be supported by careful and deliberate planning that incorporates risk management principles and an understanding of different goals to be attained with consequent medical and legal responsibilities.

TITLE: Application of Orem's conceptual framework to patients with hypercalcemia related to breast cancer.
PUBDATE: 19901001
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women in the United States. Although the disease itself may be chronic in nature, it may give rise to oncologic emergencies, such as hypercalcemia, superior vena cava syndrome, or spinal cord compression. If these emergencies are not prevented or treated promptly through early detection, premature death or disability may occur. Because it presents with general symptoms, hypercalcemia may be difficult to diagnose; however, early recognition and intervention may reverse the sequelae of this condition, and prevent recurrence. This article will focus on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, nursing assessment, and intervention in a case study of this oncologic emergency based on the Orem model.

Adenocarcinoma of the prostate gland is the most common cancer in men in the United States but it occurs rarely in men younger than 40 years. Incidental prostate cancer has been shown to exist in a significant number of patients older than 50 years, found either at autopsy or after cystoprostatectomy for a pathological condition of the bladder. We report 2 cases of unsuspected adenocarcinoma of the prostate gland discovered after total prostatovesiculectomy for refractory prostatitis in men 25 and 36 years old, respectively.

TITLE: Oestrogen receptors in well differentiated thyroid cancers.
PUBDATE: 19911101
Oestrogen receptor (ER) monoclonal antibody, H222 was used to study ER expression in forty-seven paraffin embedded blocks of well differentiated thyroid cancers. Trypsinisation, DNase I digestion, together with the use of labelled streptavidin biotin immuno-histochemical staining kit were adopted to increase the sensitivity of the immunoreaction. One out of twenty-seven papillary carcinomas and one out of twenty follicular carcinomas were immunoreactive. Thus, 4.3% of the well differentiated thyroid cancers were noted to express ER. The increased incidence and the better prognosis in females with well differentiated thyroid cancers is unlikely to be explained on the presence or absence of ER.
