TITLE: Linkage analysis of 19 French breast cancer families, with five chromosome 17q markers.
PUBDATE: 19930401
Nineteen French breast and breast-ovarian cancer families were tested for linkage with five chromosome 17q markers. The five breast-ovarian cancer families as a group give positive evidence for linkage, whereas the 14 breast cancer-only families do not. Heterogeneity of linkage of breast and breast-ovarian cancers is significant in France and supports the existence of more than one susceptibility gene.

TITLE: [Sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma: 3 case reports]
PUBDATE: 19920201
We report 3 cases of sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma, which is an uncommon neoplasm consisting of a typical renal cell carcinoma associated intimately with a sarcomatoid component. All patients were symptomatic at hospitalization and underwent nephrectomy. Two patients died of metastatic renal cancer within a year, and another is alive without evidence of metastasis for 12 months after the surgery. Because sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma has a highly malignant behavior and poor prognosis, an adjuvant treatment effective in controlling the disease is awaited.

TITLE: Screening for lung cancer in the middle-aged.
PUBDATE: 19900201
A screening programme for lung diseases has been in operation in the German Democratic Republic for more than 3 decades. The programme is based on biennial chest X-rays (70 x 70 mm posterior-anterior) of the population 40 years of age or over. With respect to lung cancer the results show that, for the population under 60 years of age, the adjusted relative risk of dying from lung cancer among subjects who took part in the last screening round compared with subjects who did not but were screened at least once during the preceding 10-year period was 0.93 (95% confidence interval 0.65-1.33).

PUBDATE: 19921201
Lung cancer infrequently metastasizes to the bowel. When this occurs, the symptoms may vary from mild to emergent in nature. Three patients are presented illustrating the life threatening complications that may occur due to bowel metastases of lung carcinoma. A review of the literature reveals that only four of 24 reported patients have survived bowel perforation due to metastatic lung carcinoma. One of the three patients presented herein survived to be discharged home. Patients with known lung carcinoma who develop abdominal complaints should be investigated aggressively to prevent life-threatening complications by early intervention.

PUBDATE: 19920801
A case of metastatic tumor of the penis from lung cancer is reported. The patient, who had received a right pneumonectomy 17 months previously for a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, complained of urinary retention and painful erection of the penis. He underwent an emergency suprapubic cystostomy. Twenty days after the procedure, he died of disseminated lung carcinoma. The autopsy demonstrated massive metastasis to the penis from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Penile metastasis from lung cancer is a very rare condition and only 14 cases of this secondary carcinoma have been reported.

PUBDATE: 19971101
For Ras oncoproteins to transform mammalian cells, they must be post-translationally farnesylated in a reaction catalysed by the enzyme farnesyl-protein transferase (FPTase). Inhibitors of FPTase have therefore been proposed as anti-cancer agents. In this review Charles Omer and Nancy Kohl discuss the development of FPTase inhibitors that are kinetically competitive with the protein substrate in the farnesylation reaction. These compounds are potent and selective inhibitors of the enzyme that block the tumourigenic phenotypes of ras-transformed cells and human tumour cells in cell culture and in animal models.

PUBDATE: 20011001
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is an emerging surgical technique to improve lymph node staging for breast cancer. Despite the rapid development of this technique, there remain aspects of SLNB that need to be further defined to provide a standardized approach. Variables, including patient selection, technical details for the performance of SLNB, extent of pathologic evaluation of the sentinel lymph node, and the impact of micrometastases, are areas of controversy. This paper reviews the controversies and discusses available data as well as personal experience and opinion.

Plasma estrone (E1), estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3) levels were determined in 51 cases of cervical cancer and 52 normal postmenopausal women. It was found that the plasma E1, E2 and E3 levels in cervical cancer patients were higher than those in normal postmenopausal women. There was a significant difference in E1 and E3 between the two groups (P less than 0.05). E1/E2, E2/E3, E1/E3 and E1/E2 + E3 were measured in the two groups. E1/E2 ratio in cervical cancer patients was higher than that in normal postmenopausal women (P less than 0.05).

TITLE: Increasing cervical cancer screening among minority elderly. Education and on-site services increase screening.
PUBDATE: 19930501
Older women participate in cervical cancer screening less regularly than do younger women. As a consequence, more lesions are found in more advanced and less curable stages in older women. Elderly black and Hispanic women have had lower rates of participation in cervical cancer screening than white women. There is a marked, inverse relationship between the stage of cervical cancer at diagnosis and the 5-year survival rate. The rate of cervical cancer screening among older women can be increased by offering education about Pap tests and onsite cervical cancer screening in housing for the elderly.

PUBDATE: 19900601
Significant sexual morbidity occurs in the majority of cancer patients. In the assessment of sexual functioning, the health-care provider needs to survey sexual behavior, sexual desire, excitement, orgasm, and resolution (i.e., the sexual response cycle), and the occurrence of sexual dysfunction(s). Data are available documenting sexual disruption for the major sites of disease, including breast, colorectal, bladder, and the genitals, as well as for those with Hodgkin's disease. The author includes a brief model (ALARM) to assist the health professional in assessing sexual functioning in cancer patients.

PUBDATE: 20010801
Laparoscopy found its first application in the field of gynecology. Today, laparoscopy benefits the general gynecologist because of its minimally invasive nature. Benign procedures, such as oophorectomies and hysterectomies, have become practically outpatient procedures. The learning curve for laparoscopy in gynecologic cancer operations is obviously steeper, more time consuming, and training-dependent. With increased operative time, cost, and the questions of safety in malignant conditions, laparoscopy has quite a burden of proof before it becomes widely accepted. This article reviews the current applications of laparoscopy in gynecologic oncology with available data and offers future directions best suited for laparoscopy in this subspecialty.

PUBDATE: 19920801
A study of 578 patients treated for colorectal cancer in the North-west region comparing survival after surgery in teaching and non-teaching hospitals was performed. All patients had a minimum of 5 years follow-up. A greater proportion of elderly and emergency patients were treated in the non-teaching hospitals. The number of operative mortalities and 5-year survival figures for all causes of death and for colorectal deaths alone were similar in teaching and non-teaching hospital patients.

PUBDATE: 19930401
To analyze the inhibitory effects of isothiocyanates on the growth of human cancer cells, the effects of these compounds on the cell cycle progression of HeLa cells were studied by flow cytometry. The accumulation of cells at G2/M phase was observed at 16 h after treatment with 10 microM allyl isothiocyanate, 2.5 microM benzyl or phenethyl isothiocyanate, at which concentrations the cell growth was inhibited to 41-79% of control. These results suggest that isothiocyanates delay the cell cycle progression of HeLa cells, leading to inhibition of cell growth.

PUBDATE: 19960701
Tumor cells undergo apoptotic cell death when treated with several chemotherapeutic agents. Since these agents, acting on different cellular targets, induce a similar pattern of cell death (apoptosis), it is suggested that a common signaling pathway of apoptosis could exist and that apoptosis resistance could cause a new form of multi-drug resistance in tumor cells. Although the mechanisms of apoptosis are not fully understood, the involvement of ICE/ced-3 family proteases in chemotherapy-induced apoptosis is strongly suggested. Identification of factors directly acting on these apoptosis pathway will offer new strategies in cancer chemotherapy.

PUBDATE: 19941201
The observation that some Nigerian patients use alternative health care services when they perceive that one medical system has failed them provided the impetus for this survey. The purpose of the survey was to understand why some Nigerian patients rely on traditional healers for cure of cancer by exploring the perceptions of Igbo traditional healers from Anambra State of Nigeria about the causes and treatment of cancer. Implications of the different meanings of illness and disease to patients and physicians provided the theoretical framework for understanding the cultural context of the study. Findings have ethical, moral, and cultural implications for professional nursing practice, education, and research.
