TITLE: Visual disturbances in advanced cancer patients: clinical observations.
PUBDATE: 19990301
Visual disturbances in advanced cancer patients are very rarely signaled, evaluated, or adequately treated. The main causes of sight disturbances are primary eye tumors, ocular metastases, and some paraneoplastic syndromes. Sight alteration can also be associated with asthenia, fatigue, anemia, and hypovitaminosis. These symptoms can be monocular or binocular, and their gravity and evolution can vary. Based on a survey of 156 patients, we estimate the prevalence of visual disturbances to be 12% in advanced cancer patients.

PUBDATE: 20000901
New triene-ansamycins designated thiazinotrienomycins F (TT-F) and G (TT-G) and a new diene-ansamycin, benzoxazomycin, were isolated from a culture broth of Streptomyces sp. MJ672-m3 and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses. The Mean Graphs of TT-G suggests that the tumor growth inhibitory activities are almost as strong as TT-B, in respect of GI50 and TGI against several human cancer cell lines.

In vulvar cancers HPV 16 positive, HPV 16 negative, and vulvar and vaginal precancerous status (VIN, VAIN) immunohistochemical technik onko- and antioncogenic proteins were evaluated. The contrary correlation between HPV 16 presence and overexpression p53 were detected. It suggest the heterogenic etiology of these cancers. There was payed attention to high activity of virus replication and intensive virion production in VAIN. Nontreated vaginal lesion may make difficult to obtain a positive cervical HPV infection treatment.

The association of pneumothorax and lung cancer is rare and diagnosis is complex in such cases. Clinical suspicion of cancer must be based on radiological findings and the existence of risk factors. We discuss the mechanisms involved in the development of pneumothorax in patients with lung cancer, the clinical significance of the association, and the recommended diagnostic approach and therapeutic guidelines.

Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer in women. It is commonly accepted that the earlier the detection of the disease, the better the prognosis. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical significance of tumour marker CA 15-3 along with Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in India women population. Tumour marker CA 15-3 concentrations reflected the tumour burden in a better way than CEA. However, the use of CEA as an additional conventional marker improved the Clinical efficiency of the marker CA 15-3.

Over the period 1966-1995, based on 11,662 patients, the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin increased three to four times in Norway mainly as a result of an increased number of localized tumours. In men, cancer of the auricle was the second most common site; in women the incidence was low.

Endorectal ultrasound is a very useful diagnostic adjunct for benign and malignant anorectal diseases. The only prerequisite in performing this test is that the examiner appreciate the impact that EUS has on the clinical management of patients. For example, the information obtained when scanning rectal cancer dictates whether local excision (i.e., sphincter preservation) or preoperative adjuvant therapy followed by radical resection is chosen. For benign disease, EUS helps direct therapy for patients with fecal incontinence and selects those patients most likely to benefit from reconstructive surgery.

The cancer procoagulant (CP) activity has been evaluated in homogenates of stomach and esophagus cancer tissues and in patients serum. Activity of CP in homogenates of stomach and esophagus cancer tissues as well as in serum of examined cancer patients were statistically higher than in the control group. The data indicate that estimation of CP activity in the neoplasmic tissues homogenates and in serum may be suggested as an new biochemical marker of cancer process useful in oncological diagnosis.

PUBDATE: 19990401
HLA Class I genes mark cells with a molecule that signals the immune system if the cells are infected with HIV. Marked cells are then killed by CD8 cells. There are three types of HLA class genes, and each human inherits some of each type. People with the most non-matching pairs appear to have the slowest progression to AIDS. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute believe that this type of genetic diversity may account for slower HIV disease progression.

TITLE: Involvement of platelets in tumour angiogenesis?
PUBDATE: 19981101
Preclinical and clinical research show that tumour growth is dependent on angiogenesis. Activation of the coagulation cascade is commonly found in patients with cancer. We propose that platelets contribute to tumour-induced angiogenesis. The basis of our hypothesis is that platelets are a rich source of stimulators and inhibitors of angiogenesis and their interaction with the endothelium. Presumably, the antithrombotic state of normal endothelium is disturbed by endothelial stimuli derived from tumour cells. This hypothesis may explain the suggested clinical benefits of anticoagulants in cancer and implies that targeting of platelet interaction with tumour vasculature will inhibit angiogenesis.

TITLE: Emerging roles for PAX transcription factors in cancer biology.
PUBDATE: 19980901
Pax genes are transcription factors which act as essential control genes during the establishment of embryonic cell lineages. Recent evidence now demonstrates that their expression is deregulated by different mechanisms in several tumor types including Wilms' tumors, rhabdomyosarcomas, brain tumors and lymphomas. The oncogenic role of PAX proteins in tumor development is now subject of intensive investigations and may include stimulation of the rate of proliferation as well as inhibition of the apoptotic program. In addition, the expression of PAX genes in these cancers might serve as a diagnostic and probably also prognostic tool.
