TITLE: [Combination of levofolinate calcium and 5-fluorouracil]
PUBDATE: 20000201
It has been determined that in the combination of Leucovorin (LV) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), LV potentiates the cytotoxic effect of 5-FU based on biochemical modulation. Many data suggest that LV/5-FU is a very effective combination, and most clinicians worldwide now regard it as the standard therapy for colorectal cancer. In Japan, clinical examinations of this combination using Levofolinate calcium (I-LV) have shown its effectiveness, and I-LV/5-FU for gastric and colorectal cancer was authorized by the Ministry of Public Welfare in Oct. 1999.

PUBDATE: 19980701
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a cancer pain education program. METHOD: Participants in the program completed an evaluation form covering various aspects of the program's design. RESULTS: All participants who completed the program were glad that they had done so. The most and least useful aspects are included in the article. Participants were satisfied with the program and eager to participate in similar ones. CONCLUSION: The education program was both successful at improving participants' knowledge of cancer pain management and provided in a manner acceptable to the participants. Ideas for future similar projects are included.

TITLE: Activation of hematoporphyrin in alternating magnetic field: possible implications for cancer treatment.
PUBDATE: 19991101
A new mechanism of cell damage by alternating magnetic field with hematoporphyrin is described. C6 glioblastoma cell suspensions were exposed to an alternating magnetic field with frequency 180 kHz up to 60 min in the presence of hematoporphyrin in H2O and in D2O. The results presented suggest that an alternating magnetic field is able to activate hematoporphyrin, and this method may be a basis for cancer treatment.

PUBDATE: 19980501
The authors mailed a pilot survey to 500 randomly selected general dentists. Although most dentists reported their knowledge of oral cancer to be current, their actual knowledge of oral cancer risk factors and signs and symptoms was inconsistent. Conflicting data were also found between their level of knowledge and their provision of oral cancer examinations. Most respondents agreed that patients should undergo an oral cancer examination annually, yet many do not provide this service.

PUBDATE: 20010201
A 15-year-old male was referred to our hospital with the chief complaint of gross hematuria. Cystoscopic examination revealed a papillary tumor on the posterior wall. Transurethral resection of the bladder tumor was performed. Histological examination of the excised tumor showed transitional cell carcinoma, grade 1, pTa. Recurrence has not been observed for about 2 years after the operation. We investigated 54 previously reported Japanese cases of bladder cancer before age twenty including the present case.

The overall importance of local tumour control in the management of breast cancer, specifically the influence of local control on survival, remains one of the fundamental questions for oncologists. This review addresses the issues surrounding local tumour control, including the evolution of the concept of disease spread, the rationale for local control, the results of studies of radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery and after mastectomy, and an interpretation of the recent data on post-mastectomy radiotherapy.

TITLE: [Detection of PSA mRNA in prostate cancer patients' blood]
PUBDATE: 20011001
A sensitive technique using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for PSA mRNA has been used to detect circulating tumor cells in the peripheral blood of prostate cancer patients. We evaluated the clinical utility of this method for staging and monitoring for prostate cancer. The number of patients who were RT-PCR positive was increased in higher clinical stages. This technique may provide useful information for treating patients with prostate cancer, especially candidates for radical prostatectomy. Confirming the value of this modality as a prognostic factor will require further study.

Association of vitiligo and skin cancer has been a subject of controversy. Occurrence of skin cancer in long-lasting vitiligo is rare, and PUVA therapy-associated squamous cell carcinomas are not reported until recent years. We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis in long-lasting vitiliginous patches in a patient with generalized vitiligo who did not receive PUVA therapy.

A group of 38 patients was studied by positron emission tomography utilizing fluorine18-labeled deoxyglucose (FDG-PET) scanning to examine the ability to differentiate postirradiation laryngeal recurrent cancer from radionecrosis. The resulting 79% correct diagnosis showed the technique to be far superior to conventional computed tomography scanning (61%) and clinical examination (43%). An algorithmic approach to evaluating and treating patients with radionecrosis and/or recurrent cancer by utilizing FDG-PET scanning is presented.

This is an open-label, nonrandomized phase I study to determine the maximum tolerated dose and dose-limiting toxicity of UFT plus leucovorin when given concomitantly with hyperfractionated radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer. The study period is determined by the course of radiotherapy, which is given as 1.7 Gy per fraction twice daily for 5 days (Monday to Friday) in 2 consecutive weeks, followed by 1 week of rest, and subsequently another 2 weeks of radiotherapy (Monday to Friday plus Monday to Thursday). Total duration of therapy will be 5 weeks.

TITLE: Infections as a major preventable cause of human cancer.
PUBDATE: 20000901
Infections may be responsible for over 15% of all malignancies worldwide. Important mechanisms by which infectious agents may induce carcinogenesis include the production of chronic inflammation, the transformation of cells by insertion of oncogenes and inhibition of tumour suppressors, and the induction of immunosuppression. Common characteristics shared by infectious agents linked to malignancies are that they are persistent in the host, often highly prevalent in the host population and induce cancer after a long latency. The associations between a selection of infectious agents and malignancies are covered in detail.

We evaluated self-collected vaginal human papillomavirus tests for cervical cancer screening and compared it with the specimens taken directly from the cervix in 247 patients at high-risk for cervical disease. The sample taken by the patient showed human papillomavirus DNA in a higher percentage than the sample taken by a doctor. Sensitivity of high-risk human papillomavirus types for high-grade cervical precursors (CIN 2/3) and invasive cervical cancers were 93% for both methods.

The incidence of prostate cancer is increasing and, due to the use of PSA, more and more patients are diagnosed with localized disease. These patients may be offered treatment with the intent to cure. Traditionally, this has been either by radical prostatectomy or some form of radiation therapy. This article describes the minimally invasive method with permanent seed implantation. The procedure, indications, contraindications, side effects and results from the literature 28 patients have been treated so far with acceptable proximate side effects and reductions in serum-PSA as expected.
