Admission Requirements

To enter the MSIT-SE program you must have:

  1. An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or other scientific or technical discipline.

  2. A cumulative QPA higher than 2.5.

  3. A summer internship is highly recommended; the internship might be completed the summer prior to beginning the MSIT-SE program

  4. Scores from Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required except for CMU undergraduates with a QPA over 3.0. Your scores should be sent to the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University. The subject test in Computer Science is not required but highly recommended.

    Institute Code: 2074
    Department Code: 0402

  5. To apply to the MSIT-SE program, the GRE general test is required.

Scores will arrive about the middle of January in time for our review process. All other application materials must be on file by our deadline of January 15. Although not required, We strongly encourage students to take a subject test if it is available to them. Your application will be viewed more favorably by the admissions committee if the subject test is included.

    • To ensure that your GRE scores reach us before the application deadline, you must take the test no later than December. We strongly suggest that you take the tests no later than October, since there are often delays in reporting and no application will be considered complete until we have received these scores.
    • If you have previously taken the GRE, your scores will be accepted if they are less than five years old.
  6. Language Requirements

To be successful in the program, it is essential for each graduate student to be able to understand and effectively communicate in English. The program does not prescribe a minimum TOEFL score as a standard for admission. The MSE program uses the university TOEFL standards as a guideline in its admission review process, but augments this criterion with its own assessment based on candidate interviews and fulfillment of prescribed language enrichment work.
