I work on using machine learning techniques to solve problems in natural language processing. My focus is on solving problems instead of sticking and promoting a particular method of solving problems.

So I love everyone: people who use rule-based techniques, people who use machine-learning techniques and people who use deep-learning techniques. Whatever works!

Areas that I have worked on (check out my publications):

  • Distributional Semantics
  • Representation Learning
  • Multilingual Learning
  • Areas that I would love to work on:

  • Morphology
  • Coreference resolution
  • Summarization
  • Question-Answering
  • News

  • One short paper accepted on word vector evaluation at EMNLP 2015
  • One long paper accepted on hierarchical sparse coding + word vectors in ICML 2015
  • One long paper accepted on sparse coding + word vectors in ACL 2015.
  • Our retrofitting paper got the Best Student Paper Award at NAACL 2015.
  • Wiki scale multilingual relation extraction dataset from NAACL paper released.
  • Got selected to attend the Heidelberg Laureate Forum 2015 among 200 other young researchers worldwide.
  • I passed my thesis proposal on March 23rd, here are the presentation slides and proposal.
  • 1 long and 1 short paper accepted at NAACL 2015
  • Check out the retrofitting tool, it should improve the quality of your word vectors in seconds!
  • I am joining Google Research London from May-July 2015 for an internship under Ryan McDonald!
  • Reviewing for the ML for NLP track of NAACL 2015 and Distributional Semantics of *SEM 2015
  • I have finally released the CCA-based cross lingual word vector projection code!
  • I am chairing the long paper session on Semantics and Discourse at EACL 2014.
  • I am going to be a research intern this summer at Google Research New York!
  • I am reviewing for the Lexical Semantics and Ontology track of ACL 2014.
  • My paper on using CCA to improve monolingual word representations with multilingual knowledge got accepted at EACL 2014. Sweden, here I come!
  • I am currently compiling a list of benchmarks for evaluation of lexical semantic tasks. Find it here.

  • I am reviewing for the MT track of EACL 2014
  • Quotes I follow in research

"When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong." -- R. Buckminster Fuller

"Pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitate." (Of two competing theories, the simpler explanation of an entity is to be preferred.) -- William of Ockham.

"Your goal is not to convince your audience that you are brilliant, but that your solution is trivial. If people think your findings are obvious, they must also believe that you are correct." -- Paraphrase of Stuart Shieber via L. Lee.

    Countries I have visited!

Before coming to CMU I was a dual degree student in Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, the oldest & the largest IIT in India. I have worked with Prof. Anoop Sarkar and Prof. Sebastian Pado as an internship student.

I wish I spent lesser amount of time on social networking websites.
