GPR* Equipment Configuration

(*) GPR stands for Ground Penetrating Radar

This pages describes the configuration of the sled that carries the GPR and the GPS. The GPR and GPS are connected to the same computer, to attach a a position measurement to every GPR reading.

Ground Penetrating Radar

The GPR has one main unit and antennas. The main unit generates the pulses and provides controls to define he pulse rate and depth reach. It also outputs the analog echo signal and the trigger for conversion.

There are two antennas: with a center frequency of 500 MHz and 1 GHz, respectively. The antennas are connected to the main unit via a 10 mt cable for operations with the antenna inside the sled, and outside, with manual control of the antenna coverage.

Pulled by a person or snowmobile
Bottom and top insulation for cold environment operation
Carries Ground Penetrating Radar (1GHz)
Differential GPS, base station within 10 Km
Battery power (10 hours of operation)
Radar acquisition: radar A/D sampling, 500 samples/radar pulse, 5 pulses/s

GPS acquisition: serial, 1 Hz update rate, accuracy 10 cm hor, 20 cm ver

Data storage: 10 hours limited, transfer to file server at camp, tape backup
