RE: master voter card creation

Never heard back from Greg on this, but I think I figured out what Lesley was referring to here.  One suggestion for the failing Spyrus problem is to create an absentee-like vote center with all precincts, for the purposes of creating master smart cards to send out to the polls to reload replacement Spyrus units.  Greg told me verbally that this doesn’t work, because you get an error regarding incorrect election or vote center.  This is true for the case of the “master cards” created with a Ballot Station, but it should not be true of cards subsequently created with the Spyrus.  The Spyrus will launder the data, and cards subsequently created with the Spyrus will work.

I realize this is a subtle difference, and I am pretty sure none of this is currently documented anywhere.  We’ll try to get this rationalized somehow.

I seem to recall Greg Forsythe mentioning something along those lines, but I didn’t follow him at the time.  Greg, what was it that prevented you from creating a suitcase of voter cards to use to re-load the Card Manager in case of emergency?

Ken, one of the "things" that was discussed when we ran into the Spyrus "clearing" dilemma was to created a full set of "master voter cards" so that the Spyrus could be reprogrammed on the spot.  I'm sure this is much too simple a solution.  What is the drawback to a set of "master voter cards?"  I seem to remember something about the voter cards needing to be made from the same PCMCIA card, or GEMS database, or something specific that threw a wrench into the "master card" plan.  Any enlightenment?  Les

Depends on your definition of “soon”.  My intent is to have it ready in time for IACREOT.

Ken,

Is the Accumulate/Load function also anticipated for the PCC soon, or just the voter card creation?  Curious.

There isn’t such thing as “master voter cards”, there are just voter cards.  The VCProgrammer can already create voter cards, of course.  The PCC will be able to do the same in a few hours hopefully.  The Card Manager can also create voter cards, though it needs to be loaded with voter cards created by something else first.

Do VCProgrammer and the future Precinct Control Center have the ability to create master voter cards (unlike Card Manager, which can create copies only)?
