IM2GPS Algorithm

James Hays, graduate student CSD, and Alexei A. Efros, assistant professor of computer science and robotics have devised the first computerized method, the IM2GPS algorithm, that can analyze a single photograph and determine where in the world the image likely was taken. News release

and Helen Whitaker University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics Takeo Kanade have won the 2008 Longuet-Higgins Prize. The award is given annually at IEEE's Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition for prior work considered novel at the time of publication that continues to be influential and has stood the test of time. The paper, written 10 years ago, was cited as "a significant advance in object recognition through probabilistic modeling and multiple-view training, yielding a state-of-the-art face detection technique."
