Favorite Books:

Faust I by Johann W. von Goethe
Describes dualism in a very poetic and philosophic way.

Als wär's ein Stück von mir. Horen der Freundschaft. by Carl Zuckmayer
Autobiography of a German poet who had to leave Germany during the 3rd Reich. His description of how he comes to America, has to abandon poetry, starts farming, and returns to Germany after the war is very intense and personal.

Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse
A classical novel critisizing modern industry exemplified by the inner conflicts that shape the life of the main character.

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
The French equivalent to Effi Briest :-)

Cryptomonicon by Neal Stephenson
Very captivating story all around cryptanalysis in two time periods: Second World War and present

Otherland by Tad Williams
A series of 4 fantasy novels around a virtual reality network. The story explores the boundaries of the human and the nonhuman and switches back and forth between real life and virtual reality. These books fascinated me by the vividness of the characters and their perceptions in their virtual world.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
A fascinating autobiography of the growing up in the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents

The Wallander Series by Henning Mankell
Several books about a Swedish police detective. He's neither a hero nor an anti-hero, but very human. He's described in such a realistic way that you actually miss him when you're not reading, and you end up reading the whole series.
